1971 O-Pee-Chee Baseball questions

Hello all,

I picked up a few 1971 O-Pee-Chee cards last night. Two of them look decent enough to possibly send to PSA, but they both have some rough edges. Will those rough edges hurt their possible grade?

Compared to the values of 71 Topps cards, what percentage more would they be worth? In the SMR of 71 Topps notes, it states "O-Pee-Chees considered scarce in comparison to Topps counterpart", so I would assume they're worth more, but I'm not sure how much.

Any and all information would be helpful.

Also, does anyone have any guesses on what the July Collector's Club specials might be? I'm hoping for $4.50-5 each/45 day turnaround time.

The rough edges shouldn't hurt you if you decide to get them graded - I recently sent a few '69 OPC's in with the rough cuts and many of them got 8's. With the rough edges, at least you can be sure that they haven't been trimmed!

As far as your question of worth compared to the Topps cards from the same year, I feel that it all boils down to PSA Registry demand. Even though there were a lot fewer OPC cards printed, there are 164 '71 Topps sets in the Registry, compared to only 7 OPC sets.

Based on the Registry number disparity, a common OPC card might actually sell for less than a Topps card in the same grade - since there would be far fewer people fighting to add it to their set.

However, the value for a HOFer OPC card probably wouldn't be too different than a Topps card, due to the fact that it would also appeal to the Player Set collector as well.

  • #41 Austin has 19 submissions, six 7's and six 8's.
#73 Brunet has 23 submissions, seven 7's and six 8's.
#173 Garrido has 21 submissions eight 7's and eight 8's.
Not exactly the low pop cards that I've been going for.

The man I bought the cards from said this day was the last day he was going to be open. It bummed me out. I hate to see any small business close its doors, let alone a card/collectables shop.
