Glossy/Tiffany Factory Set Ripping Question

If you were to want to rip 1980s Glossy/Tiffany sets for the purpose of obtaining PSA 9s (NOT 10's, but those wouldn't be rejected), how dumb of an idea is that All these years later?

Did someone say Wild Wings? LOL, here's my thread pics from a couple of years ago eating some wings image

12 of their hottest wings, in 6 minutes, with nothing else to eat or drink. All in a quest to get my picture on their Wall of Flame, and a free T-Shirt image

Here I am with a pre-challenge smile, full of bravado (and a premeal coating of Maalox)

    image

The challenge arrives, and the waitiress asks if I'm ready, I was born ready so it's time to get down to business

    image

Not quite feeling the fire yet, but can tell it's beginning to heat up

    image

Beginning to wonder what I've gotten myself into

    image

I announce to my table of co-workers that "this is stupid" and the lady beside me delights in my misery

    image

I'm full fledged on fire, eyes watering, nose running, lips burning, it's awesome

    image

As soon as I defeat the challenge, I break out a post-challenge smile of victory

    image

Nothing like some ice cream, to take the sting out of your lips and body

    image

Overall, a decent challenge. The hardest part for me was not the heat, but trying to get the wings down in 6 minutes, as I was taking my time and would give commentary after every wing. Great way to spend a lunch with a bunch of my friends from the courthouse.

Watch out Adam (Man vs. Food), I'm going to take your job.

Mike, that was great. I love super hot wings as well. We'll have to have some on Sunday.

Eric, I have installed the security measures around the museum. It is now officially a no ripping zone. image

Nice job Mike! I agree, the 6 minutes is more of a challenge than the heat!

To answer your original post, I guess it would depend on what the population and price is for the PSA 9's you are interested in compared to the value of the individual set if that makes sense.

Well then, I guess you have your answer. Start breaking sets and subbing those cards.

    Why would you do this?

For resale: With few exceptions, many of these cards, after being graded, would still be worth less than what you paid to get them graded.

For fun: Getting low $ cards graded "just because" is you paying a voluntary $5 per card "PSA Tax" on your collection.

If you just like a sturdy holder to display your cards, you could buy some magnet lock hard cases in bulk for a lot cheaper than you'd pay to get a bunch of cards graded.

Im collecting one of each essential 1980s rookie card release in PSA 9 form. Since PSA 9 is frowned upon as undesirable for the most part for these cards, they aren't listed at auction very often on eBay.

Paying $120 for Mattingly when the whole set is $175 (I need Strawberry as well) doesn't seem the best way to go. Unless of course getting a PSA 9 out of a sealed set 27 years later isn't likely to happen.

Do you want the other 790 cards in the set, or just the Mattingly and the Strawberry? If you just want the two cards, you'll save money by buying them already graded. Factory sets are a big gamble. If you get a bad one (centering, damage), you're hosed.

i'd like all the HOF cards in PSA 9 as well, but thats not a huge priority at the moment.

yes, i realize the risk of ripping sealed sets all these years later. i was wondering if anyone has recently (last few years?) opened any and how the cards looked

I picked up a 1986 Topps Traded Tiffany set a few years ago w/o the Bonds for about $26. Centering was spot on throughout the set. Unfortunatly, one corner of the box had been dented in, resulting in around 15 - 20 cards with heavy corner damage. Most of the cards I was interested in were not near that corner, so I got some good grading results:

    1 1 02191004 MINT 9 1986 TOPPS TRADED TIFFANY 20T JOSE CANSECO Card US
2 1 02191005 GEM MINT 10 1986 TOPPS TRADED TIFFANY 24T WILL CLARK Card US
    3 1 02191006 NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1986 TOPPS TRADED TIFFANY 50T BO JACKSON Card US
4 1 02191007 GEM MINT 10 1986 TOPPS TRADED TIFFANY 74T KEVIN MITCHELL Card US
    5 1 02191008 MINT 9 1986 TOPPS TRADED TIFFANY 113T ROBBY THOMPSON Card US

I think they flipped coins on the 10s and 9s, because they all look flawless and could have all been legitimate 10s.

For the sets with huge markups due to the presence of some big kahuna card, you'd be better off doing what I did, and getting a set minus that card, and acquiring it already slabbed.

Had I purchased an unopened 1986 Topps Tiffany Traded set, I'd likely have had to spend $200+ to get it. The opened set + a PSA 9 Bonds would cost me less than $100.

Also, when you buy already opened sets, you can ask for scans of whatever other key cards you're interested in and avoid a majority of the gamble.

    Mike,

Thank you for not including a picture from the bathroom getting rid of the after effects.
