ATB pop reports and value

Would a 2010 5-oz ATB PCGS MS69 PL be expected to bring a higher price than the same coin in MS69 DMPL if there were approx. two and a half times as many DMPLs as PLs in the pop report? I realize that the DMPL is a superior coin but due to the fact that people are trying to complete a "matched set" would it be unusual for the lower graded coin to sell/bring at auction a higher price than the higher graded coin?

Ask yourself this question: Would you pay more for an MS62PL or an MS69 DMPL? There are only a couple (or less) MS62 PLs around. Anyone wanting to complete a lowball MS62 set would pay up according to your suggested logic.

Bottom line: all things being equal, the superior coin will always win.

I understand what you're saying but a 62 and a 69 represents quite a spread. In my example, we are talking about the highest and second highest grade possible for this particular coin. It just seems to me that the seller holding the PL knows that there are fewer available coins for the buyer who wants to "complete" his 69PL set, so would base his price on availability considering the minor difference in grade. Thanks for your input.

Believe me, I'm "pulling" for your logic, because I am going to be the "buyer" in this instance.

Try this then: Any modern MS70 with higher pops than in MS69. They are one grade apart. Which do you think will command a higher price? The MS70 of course! Otherwise, everyone would scratch or ding their MS70 to get it to regrade down to an MS69. The same applies to your situation.
