OT: Huge hockey trade deal today.....wow

Does anyone else care about the trade the Flyers did today?
I for one am totally excited about Mike Richards coming to the Kings.
Great player that provides offense and leadership. Will he retain the "C" I wonder.
I don't care for Dustin Brown. I also think this will cause a slight spike in Brayden Schenn's
rookie cards since he'll be going to Philly. I hope he does well.

On a side note, my wife is friggin happy that Jeff Carter is going to the Jackets. They need
another sniper to help Nash. My wife's a Rick Nash fan. I like Jakub Voracek, and the Flyer's
still retain their youth and potential.

The Flyers did all this just to free up money for goalie Bryzgalov? Good move or bad move?

  • Well, I think it is a good trade. We really need a team leader. This has been lacking for years! I hate to lose Simmonds, he was always fun to watch. Most of the great moves the Kings have made in the past have never amounted to much, but I will "keep the faith".

(I think this is for another forum)
I was shocked by the Flyers trading the faces of the franchise! WOW! We'll see what happens.
  • amazed on what the flyers did now their stockpiled on goalies, obviously their going to move 1 or 2 of them and get some more draft picks but these trades can either make philly a great team in a few years or it could be a long decade for flyers fans

Richards has 0.00% chance of being captain on the Kings.

    Wow!!!

    That is a big shake-up.

I am very excited about Carter going to play with Nash. That will be a killer combo! and as already said, Nash needs someone like Carter to play with.

Not a huge Richards fan but he will help the kings.

longterm value for the flyers in the kings' deal i think. schenn could be a very very good player and that simmonds kid has good upside too. not sure about the blue jackets trade--not too familiar with the player the flyers got in return.

I for one am freakin ticked! I love my Flyers and would have accepted the fact that one was traded.....but BOTH!!!!!! However, I do trust the work of Paul Holmgren. I think he is one of the best GM's around. Well I really hope this works out.

Putting Mike Richards in Los Angeles is like throwing a seven year old into a kiddie pool full of Jelly Bellies.

My guess is that Holmgren sat down with Pronger at some point and Pronger just laid out the facts of life as they relate to Richard and Carter and their ability to lead this team. Philly probably thought they solved the problem when they shipped out Lupul, but apparently that wasn't enough.

The Flyers did all this just to free up money for goalie Bryzgalov?

Not really. The Flyers only needed to deal one of the Carter/Richards pair to free up money for Bryzgalov. Ilya's caphit ($5.6M) is in the same ballpark of Richards ($5.75M) and Carter's ($5.2M). Moving Carter made sense given the depth the Flyers had up the middle with Richards, Giroux, Carter, and Briere all capable of playing center in the top 6...though Carter is more like Stamkos and really better suited to the wing since he isn't going to make anyone around him any better other than freeing up space. I really don't think it's going to make the Jackets much better either. They needed a playmaker like Brad Richards more than a guy like Carter. Nash still won't have anyone get him the puck and win board battles and if Carter is going to play on the wing with Nash, he's just going to take more shooting opportunities away from him. Simmonds isn't much of a loss. Hands of stone and minimal finishing ability and he was about to get expensive relative to his skill-set. He is a Flyers type of player though. The Richards trade makes much less sense to me. Schenn and the draft picks would be nice pickups if the Flyers were rebuilding. Perhaps he'll get turned around and dealt during the draft again. They had a bunch of other guys like Versteeg, Hartnell, and Carle who could've been dealt instead. Maybe this is just the beginning of future moves. The Flyers seem intent on resigning Ville Leino as well so they did need to make one more trade to free up money for him. All that said, they did all of this largely to free up money for a 31 year old goalie who posted a 4.36 GAA, .879 SV% against the Wings in the playoffs and has a track record of winning nothing. You'd think the 12 year Luongo extension and 15 year DiPietro contract would motivate GMs to be a bit wiser. Oh well, good luck with those 9 years Philly. An attempt to pry Nabokov from the Islanders seems like it would be a wiser and shorter term move.

Boucher is a UFA, and Leighton will get buried in the AHL. They won't have to do anything.

    Great trade for LA.
    Great trade for Columbus.
HORRIBLE trade (and subsequent signing) for Flyers.

They overreacted once again. They could have kept some firepower (1 of the 2 talents they shipped off) and still gotten a very good goaltender.
Honestly, Holmgren does great at drafting but really has a weakness with goalies. Althought Bryz is a solid if not very good goalie, $50M over 9 years is a big pill to swallow.

one must ask why holmgren opted to ship out both carter and richards, as opposed to some of the other combinations suggested.

for one, schenn is a top-flight prospect and third-liners probably wouldn't have been enough to get him out of la. but more importantly (and as boopotts noted), there was obviously a belief that richards and carter were not the type of leaders philly wanted. i think holmgren killed two birds with one stone here: picked up some very good young players while simultaneously getting rid of two guys he didn't really believe could lead this team.

  • Eyebone,

    I agree with your comments.

But if the Kings and Columbus ever want to part with Richards and Carter, I'll take either one any day.

So they liked to party a bit too much. What multi million dollar player in the late 20s wouldn't. I don't know about you, but if it's February, and I'm in Winnipeg with a fat contract, I am probably getting into alot of trouble...

rumors suggest breaking up their "core" was more of an ownership mandate than a decision by Holmgren himself. I don't think this is the end of their moves quite frankly. They freed up $10+M (though they now have a handful of RFAs) and there are already rumors floating about Philly possibly taking a run at Brad Richards in FA....as well as Holmgren monitoring the Stamkos RFA negotiations. Who knows, perhaps they'll offer Stamkos some crazy offer sheet that TB may not be able to match given that the franchise allegedly lost over $25M last year.
