Run a search...these were discussed in great detail on this board back in 2004 or '05 with input from Mark Murphy & others. I believe they were initially sold through Red Zone and eBay seller ShaqFu. GIA was slabbing them as authentic...they are clearly an after-market product.

Stay FAR AWAY from those packs. Great link Mike (ICE9)!!!
Topps did not produce "grocery" cello rack packs in 1971 and the box that he claims is original is a cut card case box which was used by Topps to load cards from a particular letter code (like A-F). These types of cellos are too easy to reproduce and are not worth the chance IMHO.

AGREED! And when they first started selling them I spent over $3,000.00 with Red Zone on these packs. I did resell some of them, but I still have quite a few. VERY SURPRISED that a company like Red Zone did not offer refunds to purchasers after it was determined that they were really after market packs. I have GAI graded (7.5s thru 9.5s) packs from 1970, 1971 and 1972. Here is one that was in a drawer next to my PC:

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
Is there really someone who bid $5,000.00 on that card? NO WAY!

Absolutely and 100% fake. The" grocery" rack story is intended to fool collectors who recognize actual grocery racks from the 1980s. The" box" he is picturing in the auction looks like a cut card case from the 1980s too. Stay away!
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
I was wondering how many you have for sale and if you would sell a bulk lot?
Thanks!

Yeah, I'm still looking for that super duper rare 1975 grocery cello rack pack...you can keep your 52 Topps packs, as THAT baby is the new holy grail for unopened collectors!

Nick ... if I knew a seller sold something fake I would never purchase from them. I see that someone mentioned the patches were AFTER my purchases of the cellos.

Dbone - some of the other schemes (counterfeit STAR and other cards) were going on at the same time as the fake packs, though it took quite a while for people to put the evidence together.
I wasn't trying to suggest that you should have known better than to buy from him. I apologize if it came across that way.
What I meant to say is that knowing what we know now about him, why are you still surprised. Since it appears that you were referring to being surprised back then, it's time for a "Never mind."

By the way, how is that Rose auction going? Did you win yet?
Edited to add: Doug, sorry about those packs. Like you've told me, if we knew about these boards back then we may have saved a lot of money.

He probably did an off-eBay deal for that bad boy...LOL.
Maybe he did take the advice and sent it into Becketts. We can only hope.

How can you pass that up? I'm sure Grote would love those 75 custom cellos.
Ask him if he thinks he'll get any 73's or 74's in. I hear they are hard to find.
