Set with the most HOF Rookie Cards?

Just doing some quick research of older sets I am very familiar with, I counted 5 probable HOFers in the 1991 Bowman set: Chipper, Thome, Mussina, I-Rod, Bagwell. The other set that could potentially top this is the 1999 Bowman Chrome set with Holliday, Hamilton, Soriano, Sabathia, Dunn, Crawford. Many of these guys have a ways to go though to reach potential HOF status, especially Soriano. Please chime in with any newer sets I missed (I pretty much stopped collecting newer cards after 2000, when the number of short-printed and autographed rookies boomed to ridiculous levels).

'69 Topps basketball is the king of HOF rookies sets. For football, '84 Topps and '89 Score both have a boatload. '81 OPC is pretty big for hockey. As for baseball, '65 Topps has 4 cards (Hunter, Perez, Carlton and Morgan).
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

The OP asked about "newer" sets, so I disregarded any anything pre-1960.

This is a great set for rookies and HoFers.

Shouldn't we dismiss sets that have a "catch up" aspect to them. '86 Fleer has "extra" RC's because there weren't any basketball cards produced after 1981 (similarly '57 Topps and '69 Topps Basketball)... Some of the other sets mentioned are the same or are initial releases that catch up on "rookies" that aren't really rookies.

Using that criteria, I'm pretty sure that the 1972 Topps Football is the winner.

IMHO. Schilling is NOT making the HOF

Not exactly "newer", but '51 Bowman has some serious star power. Not the most but definitely some of the best.

    Mantle
    Mays
    Ford
    Fox
2.5 is pretty much my speed.

Bet you 5 PSA 10 Schilling rookies that he will! He may not be first ballot, but definitely within 5 years of the time he's eligible.

  • The 1955 Topps All American Set is Loaded with Hall of Famers Rookies with Rookies there is 8 or 9 Pro Football Hall of Famers and 2 Guys that are Basketball Hall of Famers Hanson and Stagg that is their Rookie. Most the Players are College Football Hall of Famers and probably 60 Rookies of College Football Hall of Famers. The 1952 Bowman Football and 1948 Bowman and Leaf Football are also great sets for rookies. How about the T-206 with Wagner and practically every ballplayers' rookie is in this set of 523 cards. Nothing comes close to the T-206 in terms rookies.
  • Nothing beats the T-206. Wagner, Cobb, Plank, Tinker, Chance, Chesboro, Walsh, Young, Mathewson,Lajoie,Wheat, Waddell, Speaker, Willis, McGraw, McGinnity, Joss, Johnson,Jennings,Huggins,Griffith,JimmyCollins,Eddie Collins,Evers,Brown,Clarke,Bender,Baker,Flick,Breshnahan,Wallace.

Actually, that's not correct. Amazingly, T206 only contains one true rookie card for a HOFer, Zach Wheat. Here is the link the true rookie card for every HOF baseball player: HOF Rookie Card List

    98 SP Authenic Football

    Peyton Manning

    then...
    Ahman Green

overall not a bad group for only a 126 card set. SP sure picked some good rookies to highlight (we will forgive them the Leaf and Griese cards).

Not even close.... Wheat and Speaker only! Many of the players you listed were playing in the 19th Century... T206 came out in 1909.

I'm with you. I know they're "rookies" but I just don't consider the rookies from the '86 Fleer basketball set to be of the same "type" as rookies like a '75 Brett.
