Mercs show up here from time to time on the BST and they are also appearing on eBay. Just have to check on them. The Mercs seem to be about the second most obtainable (behind Morgans) so your task is not all that onerous. The ones I have seen have all been 40s dates and are cetainly solid for the grade.

Put up a post on the BST . . . . ."WTB Doily Merc". Should get some action.

How many Doilys must one own before he or she is considered a serious doily collector?

I'll just throw out this answer before I go out and finish mowing the back yard . . .

'Serious' might be considered the degree of appreciation you have of the history, the development, the reasoning behind, and the condition of . . . the holder. Collector? Hoarder? Accumulator? Hard to say, but I think if you appreciate the uniqueness of the item, just one is sufficient to be serious. If you are lucky enough to run into a few, so much the better.

In some regards, Doilies are like horsepower. You can never have enough.

Ok, you've got me interested and intrigued. I know you're mowing your grass right now, but later when you catch up with this thread, where is the best source to look for these?
Is there anything published I can read that references these neat slabs other than just the statistics offered in the PCGS slab thread?
Are there any moderns known to be in Doilys (such as Ikes or Kennedy halves)?

Not so much how many as how much one will pay for the wanted one might also be used to define the doily nerd.

Doilies are like guns. When asked, Senator Phil Gramm would say "More than I need, but not as many as I want."

Wherever fine coins are bought, sold or traded.image

Generally, one has to be on the lookout form them as they tend to show up out of nowhere.

I would tend to agree as to what one would pay for the holder and the coin, in fact I know that one of the board members did in fact have a doily and an ogh for sale on ebay and another board member won the item- but then all he77 broke loose and the sale ended in a bitter moment in which the item will be relisted. Seems like the seller kindof played it out and they did not get the 'bite' they were hoping for, again.

but then we know who the seller is and who the buyer was- the original thread WAS on the BS&T and now it has gone onto a place of never neva land.

God loves forum cops and God Bless America

please post a Frankie to keep this on coin topic, or a nice colorful Merc.

    Tom . .

That Frankie is a schweeeet piece. One superb Doily . . . and I'll be lusting after it. But just like Giselle Brady (nee' Bundchen) . . . I'll never get it.

Casey, the simple advice Tom gave is absolutely true. I got my first Doily from Bob White in Portland (OR), a great dealer friend of mine. My second was in Vegas from SilverChris here on the boards, and then it was 'off to the races'. They do not appear at any prescribed interval or any specific place. They truly just come along one at a time here and there as old collections get dispersed. In Long Beach Summer 2010 I searched HARD and found NONE. In Long Beach Summer 2011 I got 6. Explain that! It helps to have a framework in place of dealers and fellow collectors who will watch out for them for you, but of course the Doily Premium is not exactly a secret. When one is found . . . I pay 'up'. Want to lose a friend fast? Give them Graysheet bid for a Doily they found for you.

I have found them on the BST, have had PMs sent my way, have haunted eBay endlessly, and cultivated a network of friends, collectors, and dealers all over the country who will keep their eyes open, and they come VERY infrequently. Some weeks or months I will be bereft of any Doilies at all . . . then I get something like Long Beach Summer 11 -- a feeding frenzy!

Admittedly, several of my best have come from members here who have for various reasons decided that selling me one was OK. I am forever in their debt and won't identify them, but they know very well who they are. I keep a record of where I got them and let's put it this way . . . . . . without these Boards I'd be some schmuck mowing his lawn in suburbia. Now I'm a schmuck mowing his lawn . . with some Doilies. Not too much difference, but it's fun.

My advice . . . listen to oreville, Bajjerfan, astrorat, Billet7, and a couple others whose handles escape me now. They offer good, and sometimes invaluable advice on finding and pricing these special pieces of history. I owe a lot to them.

My final advice . . . go to the 'search' function, type in 'doily' and read EVERY thread from front to back. I did it. Best thing in the world for me. Then listen to the pros here. I listed them above . . .

    Uh . . . . . Frankiefanatic . . .

I know the history on that one. You wouldn't like the price. But you would without question LOVE the coin (and holder). He did well on that one . . .and I can imagine that is one coin that he WILL be "taking with him".

In retrospect, it seems that the buyer should have contacted the seller saying that he was having issues with accounts associated with his PP account and that he expected the issues to be resolved in X number of days. Or I can pay thru another PP account or by check or money order. How would you like me to proceed?

IIRC the final price was higher than the original BIN, so I don't understand why the seller would feel [if that is really the case] that the listing underperformed.

For the 2.0, the holder is common enough that there is no premium for it. IMO it is unrealistic to expect that a common date coin is going to bring 10X sheet just because it is in a doily. I suppose it can happen if the right buyer just chances to see it at the right time. Generally the ones that bring top dollar are nice toners, better dates, coin series [such as standing lib quarters] that appear to be scarce in these holders or possibly common dates in high grade like a 85-o Morgan in ms67. Coins that are fugly or dogs probly won't bring much premium either. Morgans appear to be the most common series in doiles, but something like the 89-cc mite fetch strong $$$ simply because it might be the only one of its kind.

There are 3 that have been on eBay since Moby Dick was minnow and aren't getting sold simply because the listers aren't starting low and letting the bidding frenzy take over.

If one had a Morgan grading set of any date in doilies it might bring a small fortune. In fact circulated coins of any type seem to be extremely scarce in these holders.

It may be more correct to place a dollar premium on the holder and not a multiple of price guide. Namely because Doilies (and other "rare" holders) tend to have a minimum value regardless of the coin. For example, a while back, a Board member had an open offer of $75 for any coin in an undamaged Doily. At the time, the offer was "crazy" and may or may not have got any takers. Now, the floor for a Doily seems to be in the $150-175 range for an inexpensive coin, but much higher if the coin is less often seen in a Doily. For example, if a 1945 Merc dime in MS-63 is offered for auction, I bet it would sell for under $200. If a two-cent piece in VG-8 showed up in a Doily, I bet the price would be above $400 just because that type coin is so rarely seen in a Doily - and there is at least one of "us" who is putting together a type set of Doilies [are "we" nuts or what?].

    "We"?

    "Type Set"?

    Huh?

I just saw the Doily thread and stopped by, wondering what this was about. Seems like nothing anyone would want to collect. I'm going back to my blue Whitman folders.

I did! How do you think I got his paypal email?. I have a message in my inbox right now that says its okay to send from my friends account and that eBay automatically sends out a unpaid case but he will remove it as soon as they initiate it.

Looks like I'm late to the party...as usual.

Mercs are quite common, especially if you include the sample holders. I do not have any images to share, sorry.

Some coins are very rare in doily holders, and most are easy enough to suspect...twenty cent pieces, two cents, three cents...etc. The ones that surprise me the most are the quarters...they are among the most common coins ever minted, yet they are much more rare in a doily than one would expect. For the longest time there were only two listed...that number has increased recently, but the number sits at five if I'm not mistaken (and one of the two originals has since been cracked.) Considering the fact that there are over 100 Morgans listed, I am very surprised that quarters rank so low. I have had a very difficult time finding quarters, luckily there is a forum member that is "holding on to" a few of mine image.

I think the reason is that during the time doilies were being produced, washington quarters were a seriously "dead" series, so they never got sent in. Everything else got cracked. You'll also notice patterns of morgan dollars that were certified. I'm sure there were batches of certain dates that were sent in at the same time. That's why some dates are commoner than others.

    Broken record, I know.

I know there is at least one other SLQ out there, but I don't know any more other than that the person says he has one. I offered to have his coins put into the census, but so far I have not heard back.
