If I might make a suggestion, should you ever go there again, send your hat in first on the end of a ten-foot pole........

Let's review for a minute... He doesn't know you. You already asked about specific things he didn't happen to have, therefore in his mind the likelihood of him selling you something just went down dramatically. Then you wanted to rummage through his stock box on the odd chance you might find something. That's all well and good, but maybe the guy was worried about getting something lifted by this person he doesn't know. Or, maybe he didn't want to have to babysit some lookie-lou who in his mind (rightly or not) was going to waste time looking through the box and not buy anything.
Maybe he was in the middle of working on something he deemed more important. Maybe he didn't like the color of your socks. Maybe he had to go pee. Maybe he's just a jerk.
Whatever the reason, it shouldn't matter. "No" is a perfectly acceptable answer to a question... no matter what side of the counter you are on. If it really bothers you that much, then don't patronize the guy. Problem solved.

I don't mind not patronizing the guy. I just don't want the guy to patronize me.
