Detroit Tigers Custom Cards: Brandon Inge Tribute and 1978 Super Rookie

With the release of Brandon Inge by the Tigers, I decided it was time for an Inge custom (in the style of 1972 Topps Boyhood Photos of the Stars):

These four represent an important chunk of the amazing 1984 World Series Champion Detroit Tigers, but were kept apart in cardboard by Topps' decision to group rookies by position in their 1978 set.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
I also find myself looking at the background. Man...I sure do miss the old Stadium.

Keen-eyed viewers might recognize that I got the Trammell/Morris/Whitaker pics from their 1978 Burger King cards.

I have always felt the same way. It's the main reason I felt Sparky was somewhat over-rated. His insistence on over-using his bullpen - earning the nickname "Captain Hook"- cost his team many victories in the seasons following the magical year of 1984 (that year his bullpen was pretty much flawless). If a manager uses 5 pitchers on a nightly basis, odds are one of them is going to have a bad night and blow the game. Then letting Parrish and Gibson get away ended that great Tiger era too soon.
Absolutely great custom card by the way!! I was not at all a fan of custom cards until I saw this one!

<< <i>How long did it take you to design it? You printed it out as a custom? >>
Every bit of it was created from scratch with the exception of the pictures. I made this a while ago so it's not fresh in my mind, but I think it was around 2-3 hours. I very rarely print anything out because I've never been satisfied with how they look when printed.
Awesome card! My new desktop background!! Thanks!
Very nice job on the card!

Who could forget the famous karate kick by Rozema in the bench-clearing brawl. The amazing thing about that is that he pitched pretty well after returning from that knee surgery, despite pitching with a huge leg brace on. Don't know how a pitcher could stride, plant and pitch with something like that on his leg.
and as to Nam's addition of Molly- I'd take Trammell over Molitor any day!! I'll never fully respect a guy who's claim to fame is a DH!! Tram/Sweet Lou turned more double plays together than any combo ever will.... and they weren't too bad offensively either!! but lol on the Molly addition to the card.
<< <i>Interesting fact- In 1985, Dave Rozema and Kirk Gibson, best friends, married each other's sister in a double wedding ceremony.

I think your fact is not completely accurate Roar. Gibby and Rozie married two girls who were sisters, but they were not "each other's" sister. And mercifully, you left out the part about where Gibby and Rozie met said sisters.

I loved those Tigers teams, but Sparky drove me nuts as a manager. He'd only use 20 or 21 players--the rest would be in what he called his "walking eagle" list and permanently benched. Also remember that the Tigers had the misfortune of playing during the Peter Ueberroth era, when owners colluded to reduce the active rosters to 24 players, and to not sign each other's free agents--an era in which the commissioner complained that the biggest financial threat to the game was cable superstations offering national broadcasts of otherwise out-of-market games to fans.
But that is a very cool card. At least three of those guys should be in the Hall of Fame. Just think--if a national audience had been able to see Jack Morris pitch on a regular basis throughout the 80's (as they did with Rick Mahler) the average fan might understand what makes him Hall-worthy.

Amen to that!
