what causes light scan?

I have a couple of cards on eBay with back scans where the scans look much whiter than the card itself. For example, it makes a 1956 Topps gray back look white. How can I correct this? I was even accused of trying to sell a 1956 Topps Mantle reprint because the scan distorted the color so much. Any help is appreciated.

Always looking for Mantle cards such as Stahl Meyer, 1954 Dan Dee, 1959 Bazooka, 1960 Post, 1952 Star Cal Decal, 1952 Tip Top Bread Labels, 1953-54 Briggs Meat, and other Topps, Bowman, and oddball Mantles.

    If you can't solve it with your scanner, you can always download Gimp (similar to Photoshop, but free) and adjust the brightness/white balance so it looks natural.

    If the above scan is with the lid open, try it with the lid closed and vice versa.
