German Thaler NEWP

Anhalt Bernburg was a relatively small principality of the Holy Roman Empire and a Duchy of the German Confederation. It was the result of the breakup of the Principality of Anhalt in 1252 after the death of Henry I and the division into three parts given to his sons. It was ruled by Alexander Carl from 1834 until his death in 1863, at that point it was inherited by the Duke Leupold IV of Anhalt Dessau reuniting all the Anhalt lands.

I've always liked this obverse design but it seemed finding a high grade piece was very difficult. These are not scarce, with a mintage of 20,000, but all of the ones I have looked at seemed to me to be in the 62-64 range. This one in PCGS 66.

Very nice J. I sold it's smaller brother, a 1856 Anhalt sixth of a Thaler on my website no long ago. It wasn't slabbed but it was high grade with very nice proof like surfaces.

    Jeff:

One thing when you buy a coin from Philip, it always looks better in handimage We always asked if he took his pictures through cheese clothimage BTW, I know the underbidder and he thought he would win.

Thanks 3Mark, I've bought a couple of coins from them in the past and was always pleasantly surprised, they seem to desaturate the colors on the images a lot. I also got an email from the underbidder, but it was worth double the book value to me to get one in high grade.

I also bought the 1797 Hamburg 8 Schilling from them.
