Weekend pickups and a 1964 Topps question.

I found a few gradeable cards this weekend and wanted to know if I would get dinged on grades for the scratch-off portions of the back of the 64's having been rubbed. I looked at the scratch-off under 10x and there don't appear to be any grooves or indentions from where it was rubbed. Anyone have any prior experience with these?

Side note...Billy O'Dell couldn't have asked the person from Topps to take his pic when he wasn't having a "flare-up"?

  • I don't have any idea about the scratch off portions, my GUESS would be that it is still considered "surface" so it could either be "surface missing", or if they are 'flawless' it would still fall under surface - just what makes logical sense to me.

Those are some purrrdy cards image good luck with whatever you do.

might drop it 1 to 2 grades. Dont think it has a chance at a 9 with it scratched. But 7-8s are possible like that
  • oh my, the centering on those '64s is amazing!

I'd agree that PSA 8 is your ceiling on the 64's unless the rubbing indented the cardboard noticeably - then 6. Sharp cards!

Nice cards...I have collected the 64 set for a while and have yet to see a PSA 8 with the back scratched off. I have many cards that look like 8s with the back scratched off that are in 7 holders. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

I've noticed from my 1964 Topps baseball cards collected as a kid, that on some of the backs the "paste" covering the answer has disintegrated over the years to the point where ya can actually read the answer without scratching it...and sometimes it almost looks like it was scratched to get the answer, that's how much the "paste" has naturally worn off...when I know for sure these cards were definitely not scratched. And yet on other cards the "paste" is still strong and ya couldn't read the answer without scratching it.

I wonder if PSA takes this into account? They probably do, which is likely why ya might see similar high grade worthy cards, whereby the answer is showing, perhaps getting a 6 or an 8 depending on whether or not there is actual wear over the answer.

BTW:The two cards shown I think it's clear were definitely scratched, and the "paste" didn't just disintegrate - a high grade is unlikely on those cards, in my opinion.

The centering on those cards is great, but agree that PSA 7's are about as high as they will go with the answers scratched off on the back. Unless it was scratch in such a way as to not leave surface scratches then you may get a chance at some 8's.

FWIW, I found about 15 PSA 9s on ebay that had scans of the back, and none of them had scratch-off portions that were scratched.
