It's in a PCGS holder but I wish I could see it outside the plastic. A condition/grade rarity by anyone's definition and an absolute rarity according to Ambro's understanding, do you think PCGS would slap a "First Strike" label on it??
I mean, hey, it's probably eligible, right??
All kidding aside it's just a nice Gem with adequate frost and solid mirrors, untoned and mark free save for two miniscule obverse spots.

ago that I had to sell off to pay some bills, It was in a NGC Proof66 holder,
over the years I had it it developed a light rose tone to it, in the holder.
I regret selling that one since I hav'nt seen one since that has struck me,
well until now. Nice Nickel.

I have a couple of '40's with decent frost, but none made cameo at PCGS.
Now with respect to "First Strike", it looks to me that the reverse die may have been repolished (or maybe the holder is scratched). If the reverse is repolished, that would suggest that that die was used previously and may not actually be a "first strike".
Then again, who knows what First Strike really means these days.

What a shame as almost Full Steps if it wasn't for the obstruction!
good eye 'nut, there is also die polish evident on the obverse though not nearly what is present on the reverse. this begs the question: is the evidence of die polish a sign that the dies were "re-worked" and used again or is it evidence that they were "worked" prior to being used initially to attain the needed Cameo contrast that the Mint was striving for?? there is no loss of detail on either side in the areas which show die polish lines, all the lettering is strong and the fields quite reflective(although moreso on the obverse). this is one reason i'd have liked to have had the oppurtunity to examine the coin outside of the plastic.
on emptying a few sdb's and cutting loose some one of a kinds, dont wanna hear no
sob stories if there no available funds-

Determining what stage the die was at would be helpful in trying to find out if the die was re-polished or polished prior to being used the first time. Is it an early die state? mid? late?

good point.
looking at some pictures of other 1940 Proofs i have seems to show the same obverse die was used on this coin as well as on another PR65/R.40 and a PR67/R.38 i have. it would be easier to judge die state among those three coins with them in-hand but the mirrors on the OP coin are better overall and it seems to have a little better hair detail than even the PR67.
