Picked this up on ebay. These large flan pieces are nice, and this one in particular has a sharp strike.

I agree with previous comments. It should upgrade unless missing most of the luster, which if it is, it's not evident in the photos.

I've watched coins by that seller in the past but they always seem to go for very strong prices.
He must have quite a following.

I am at a loss why a seller would have a following which pays premium prices on lower quality. I have seen similar coins (slabbed) fetch completely different pricing levels on the bay.

Just got word back from NGC. They can not cross this over unless they crack it open as it does not have an edge view holder. The reason is that there is always a risk of mounting.

Question - what to do here? Ask them to crack open and regrade or let it be?

Thats a risky one Z.

Normally I would say go for it and put your trust in PCGS not missing anything like that, however I think NGC have been grading super strict lately and there is a risk of it not grading.

I don't suppose they can tell you whether or not it seems like it wouldn't body bag for any other reason bar ex mounted etc?

I only ask because I know I would be disappointed if I told them to crack it out and then they deemed it had been cleaned or body bagged it for a more obvious reason that could be seen through the slab.

Hus - you are approaching it exactly as I have. I asked them that contingent on there being no rim mount issues (which I doubt PCGS would miss) would it go over XF-45. If the answer is yes, I am inclined to crack open @ NGC.

If that was their answer I would definitely say yes go for it. It does look nicer then XF-45 unless it has been net graded for a problem that is not obvious.

I'd say let it be. Why risk anything? It is a premium looking coin in an XF holder.
