Are there any Lions Club members on these boards? Would you support a US commemorative program?
Literally seconds ago, I got an email from the Lion President of my local Lions Club. I am a member of the club in my town. Growing up dirt poor, I feel the need to give back to the community, and I give a fair amount of my time each year with both brawn (doing service projects, such as cleaning up parks in town), and brains (organizing and running one of our main fundraisers and doing legal and tax work for the club). Each year, the club in my town (approximately 65 members) raises nearly $100,000 for charity, which goes back to charitable causes (we tend to provide for the downtrodden in my town who can only afford the BMW 5 Series, rather than the 7 Series.
The email below indicates that there is some legislation proposed to authorize a Lions Club commemorative in 2017. Now I will be honest, I think some of the US commemorative programs are hokey. However, if this program raises awareness of the club and provides a benefit to communities around the country, then I am supportive.
I was wondering if anyone else here is a member of the Lions, and if not, whether you think this commemorative (if passed), will be successful.
Here is the email:
Dear Lion Leader:
As we approach the 100th anniversary of our organization in 2017, Lions are looking to highlight this milestone. The Sandy Spring Lions Club in Maryland proposed a commemorative U.S. Mint silver dollar as a way to celebrate our centennial. With the sponsorship of Representative Peter Roskam of Illinois, we are one step closer to making the coin a reality after the introduction of the "Lions Clubs International Century of Service Commemorative Coin Act" or HR 2139.
Passage of the legislation depends on accruing 290 House sponsors and 67 Senate sponsors in order to send HR 2139 to the President for his signature into law. We need your help to achieve President Scruggs' goal to confirm 150 co-sponsors by international convention this July!
Take action today!
1. Call/write your U.S. Senators and Representative and ask him/her to co-sponsor HR 2139.
2. Urge Lions in your districts and clubs to call/write their U.S. Senators and Representatives to co-sponsor 2139.
3. Post www.lionsclubs.org/coin on your website and Facebook page to inform followers about this important endeavor ask them to take action.
With 375,000 Lions nationwide, we can send a message to Congress that Lions have a mighty roar and will be heard! For more information regarding this effort and to view sample phone scripts/letters, visit www.lionsclubs.org/coin today and take action!
Sincerely,
LCI Staff
