Low ball dealer?

jdimmickjdimmick Posts: 9,973 ✭✭✭✭✭
I just got finished doing an appraisal for a gentleman. He had gotten an appraisal last week from a dealer out in Tenn last week when his mom died, but wanted to check back here, where he lived,

it was an assortment of various stuff.

There were approx 128 silver $ in the mix, couple were pretty worn, but many were really nice incl Pre 1900 Unc's, a seated $, a few better dated coins as well. The other dealer blanket priced em all at 18 bucks each. This alone was a big difference.
Then I could figure out why he was such a strong buyer on the gold coins as his price per coin was a bit higher than mine, then I realized he missed a few , didnt count them (missed ones)at all. (and this was not by accident)

18 bucks is low even for a low ball dealer. That's $23 an ounce. I mean, a few back of spot -- even $5 is expected but $14? Crazy. Especially when there's a Seated $ in the mix.

If the intent was to deceive the seller by omitting the coins, then he's not a "low ball dealer," he's a thief.

Typical B and M coin shop. They size you up and if they think that you don't know much about coins, they try to rip you off without mercy.

It's how money is made at many local B&M's ... and it is nothing new.

Kudos to the gentleman for his diligence. It sounds as though he's still holding. Maybe he will become a numismatic sort like his mom.
