Help me grade this tired, toned 28-S Peace Lady

BryceMBryceM Posts: 11,941 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm a newB at the grading game and I've been concentrating my efforts on figuring out a single series for now, Peace Dollars. I don't know why, but these ladies are my favorites.

I got this toned 28-S as one of three coins that came with an album I purchased for around $80 total. The other two were obviously whizzed/cleaned wannabe sliders but this one catches my eye every time I look at her. I've seen plenty of ugly, black Peace Dollars but for some reason I really like this one. Maybe the contrast between the devices/fields is what I like. Is this a bit of new wear on top of old toning? She has plenty of dings but I don't really see all that much wear and the strike seems decent. I'm under no illusion that this is a super specimen, but I like it, and I'm wondering what the consensus is here.

I'm very much a student of this game, so thanks for your input!

The details look around vf-25 to me, but I'm no expert. I'm very fond of the "circulated cameo" ('circam') of coins like this one. A scarred veteran of commerce.

    Another VF vote.

Anyone else? To me she looks better than VF. There are tons of marks, but the devices are still pretty sharp with good detail in the feathers and in Liberty's hair. I'd have thunk XF, based mostly on the lack of high-point wear. Am I crazy?

I don't know much about them either, but I do have a full set in AU/BU.....I think the huge photos are exaggerating the wear and tear a bit, and my thinking is that it might stretch to XF40. There is very little price differential between the grades, so it's kind of academic.

It does look better in hand than in the photos, but I agree, it is completely academic. For me, that's the point. I'm just trying to sort out how much wear there actually is and how that contributes to the overall grade.

Looks like a pretty solid EF-40 to me. The eagle's wing feathers start to disappear when a
Peace dollar drops into the VF grade range.

My first impression was EF 40, but I like to see a bit of luster on a 40 so without seeing it in hand to get an idea of luster I 'd give it a 35. My first series I completed was Peace dollars, they just kinda spoke to me too. So have fun!
