Topps gave me the finger, re: Million Card Giveaway

I elected to ship 20 or so of my MCG cards back in February or March or whenever it was. All of them (which were 60s and 70s commons) showed up, with the exception of my "money" card, which showed as "backordered."

This card was my "money" card.

By no means a Mantle rookie, but still a decent card (it's a high number), and for a Yankees fan, I was looking forward to adding it to my collection.

Anyway, I received notification that the card shipped this week.

The package arrived today and this is what I got:

............drumroll............

Wow. There are currently TWENTY-FIVE of the '65 Yankees Team cards on eBay. It looks like they exhausted all possible avenues to fulfill this card, huh?

Dear Topps:

What a load of crap.

Here's my Topps screw-job. A 1961 Rizzuto MVP card turned into a 1954 Wayne Terwilliger

What BS! I'm not a modern collector, but I bet they advertised this promo quite a bit and the packs did not come cheap. Again, what a bunch of BS.

Could this be grounds for a class action law suit. I mean they lied in order to sell their product and did not fulfill their end of the deal. that really stinks.

Wow to say Topps dicked you would be an understatement. EAsports PM me your mailing addy and I will get and send you one of the 1965 Topps Yankees Team cards.

EDIT: About sueing I am sure they disclose somewhere in the terms of the promotion that they reserve the right to substitute another card of their choice as long as it is of equal value in their eyes. Which means any cards that is older than the one you were suppose to get it looks like.

That is ridiculous! They made a ton off that promotion.

unfriggenbelievable. All the money Topps makes on Heritage, yet it seems when it comes to offering real vintage cards, they forget what got them here.

I forget the exact year, around 1990 or 1991, they had a "promotion" whereby in certain packs they would include a real vintage card. I bought around 5 boxes of I think it was around 36 waxpacks per box, and found not one single vintage friggin' card. I would have taken an old Clay Dalrymple with a pinhole just to get "something"...those cheap bastiges at Topps.

Seriously, you got screwed man. Topps is doing it to everyone though, not just you. For example, I unlocked a 1960 Topps Dick Hyde and they sent me some stupid letter saying they didn't have any and then gave me some worthless Yankees team card instead. The gall of those people!

How could they not have the card??? They must have pulled a few MINT cards from Kit Young amongst the thousands of VG commons like the Fair-good '65 Giants team card I received. Look for ToppsVault to auction a PSA 9 '65 Yankees team card in the near future.

I wonder if they pulled the same thing w/ the person who won the 52 Mantle card?

I would think so, would it prevail? That's another story.

    Good for you.

Would a class action lawsuit prevail.......probably not. But think of the money Topps would put out in lawyer fees. It would be a heck of a lot more than producing the cards for the winners.

I'm quite certain that somewhere in their lengthy contest rules, they said a substitute card could be sent. Luckily though, I got all of the cards I requested. Nothing great (I made some poor trades!) but I got some nice vintage cards (a few HOFers), some possible HOF rookies (Tim Raines, etc), and some good modern rookies (Ryan Howard/Cole Hamels, Piazza, etc). The modern cards all arrived in very good shape. The vintage were so-so, as expected. I thought it was fun, but the Diamond giveaway hasn't sucked me in at all.

It was 1991 and they were seeded something like one vintage card in every 10 cases.

  • I still haven't gotten my cards yet. Wonder if I will? Maybe my valueless cards won't be able to be located and they'll replace it the the '52 Mantle!

I won an autographed Larry Bird jersey about 10 years ago from, I think it was, UD Glass. UD sent me a photo instead, and when I complained, they made it up by sending me a black autographed Bulls Jordan jersey. Too bad Topps doesn't have the same integrity.

    What a racket.

BTW, I didn't even try to redeem the 10-12 cards I won - the shipping would have cost three times what the cards are worth.

    Yet it sure is racket.

Same here. Best card I have is a 1988 Topps Pete Rose Manager card. I doubt if I elected to ship it I would get it. I already have 20+ of the card in mint condition. Why spend even more $$ for a EX condition card.
