I am retired and it is my only job. I refer to the bank where I get the boxes as "My silver mine". Went through more than a half ton of half dollars since I started in May and made $1700. This last box was phenomenal! I have three more boxes to look through this weekend and, as always, will keep you up-to-date.
I've been doing this for 8-9 years now and have found over $150 face in 90% and over $700 face in 40%, lately my finds haven't been so good but I still go mining once a month.

Summary of only boxes searched since April: # of boxes=59 # of boxes containg no silver=11 Probability of any one box containg silver=81% Average silver value per box= $34.51 {based on today's silver spot} found 309 40% and 36 90%
Found a gold-colored-plated half that had 'Obama 2008' on the obverse {aynbody know if it is real gold plate?}
The only thing I got out of two of the boxes was dirty hands(zero silver).
Taking a week off to check out retirement homes in Las Vegas. If I move there, then I will probably never search through halves again. The casinos use halves in Blackjack, and every dealer I have seen knows about the silver ones. Oh well, no more savage winters.
all of these rants and raves caused me to go searching thru a large jug of change last night. 3hrs later, I dug out a 1942 quarter, 1942 nickel, 1938 nickel and several more old nickels from the 1950's and early 1960's. At least $8 in silver. Must of searched several thousand coins. I can't believe how many old nickels are still in circulation. I think I might try the half searching, I'm sure I'm not located near any you guys so we'll all be ok . I wouldn't stake a claim on your claim! --aap
Sorry to hijack your thread,,,, but I asked for some at the bank today. Teller says she has $10 worth which another customer brought in. She leans down to open up a lower drawer and couple of seconds emerges with an envelope. Tears it open and counts them out, $10 in halves.
Every one of them clad. No silver.
Oh well, at least I had a few seconds of free excitement.

After 81000 halves, the probability of finding silver in any one box is 77%...so I guess I will keep doing this until I move to Las Vegas. 8000 per week until Feb15th=56000 halves.
All of the silver was found in one of the 6 boxes. The other 5 boxes contained no silver and no proofs. I have a feeling that those last five boxes (all with the same inventory number), consisted of half dollars that I had already searched through. I think it is the end of the goose that laid the silver egg for me. Maybe the pick-up bank's armored car company ran out of their stockpile of halves (because of me) and ordered some more from the drop-off bank's armored car company. I have eight thousand more on order from the bank, but I fear that this is over for me.
After I look through these eight boxes, I will deliver the FINAL report of my silver mining operation, probably by Jan 7th. By then I will have searched through 103,000 halves!!
Happy New Year to everybody!! I am off to Panama for vacation and in February I move to Las Vegas!!
Quite the endeavor, good work. I gave up on the sport because I started to get a metallic taste going on any time I did a search. Both copper and clad searches. Now, even today years later I get that taste when I handle metals for a few minutes. Hopefully you did not acquire that annoyance.
fastrudy: where are you ordering these halves from? Online or a bank? I've asked my bank and they don't take orders for coins, they only have what they order for themselves. I can't even get $25 boxes of the new cents there, they just have circulated mix.
When I funded my new account at this bank, I specifically asked them if they could order halves for me. They said "yes" and so did I. You must find a new bank.
Now the totals: Since April 2011, I have looked through 103 boxes of halves (that's 103,000 half dollars). 24 of those 103 boxes had no silver in them. The probability of finding silver in any one box is 77%. The average amount of silver found per box is $25.82 (at todays price). I have found 462 40% and 70 90% silver halves for a total value of $2660 (at todays price). In the last month, the pickings went from slim to poor. I think I wiped out an armored car companies inventory of halves.
These totals only reflect the halves found in the boxes I had ordered. It does not include the 160 90% silver halves that the teller told me about and for which I recieved my second "You Suck" award (thank you). But if I was not ordering and having interest in halves, those eight YOUSUCK rolls would be placed in a dark corner of the vault for a long, long time. I am finished with my quest. Next month I move to Las Vegas, where the halves are thoroughly picked through by Blackjack dealers. In four days, I leave for eleven days in Panama to enjoy a much needed vacation away from half dollars (I will be looking for Medio Balboas instead).

The half in the flip has a gold-colored plating on it. It has 2 counterstamps (at 8 o'clock and 4 o'clock) that say "1960" and "1985"

I also found a lusterous 1971 with a silver colored edge. Weighed in at slightly more than a normal 1971. I supposed it was amalgamated at one point.

The teller said she had $500 loose in the back.
I think that it was someone elses dumpings though as there was no silver
I did find a gold plated 1983 with two counter stamps on it 1960 1980.... Guessed they missed that one?
