PCGS Generation 3.5 slabs.....How scarce are they?

ManorcourtmanManorcourtman Posts: 8,488 ✭✭✭✭✭
According to Condor101's analysis this transitional slab was only produced in the last week of December 1989. How do they stack up against the Doily slabs some of you guys are wild about?? Just as tough to find or not?? Here's one I recently acquired.....

Conder101 did an absolutely spectacular job with his slab history book, but one must keep in mind that he did not get cooperation from PCGS for the time periods of production for slab generations and had to guesstimate the dates on many or most slab generations. This comes into play more acutely on those generations that were earlier, such as this, or produced for shorter periods of time. There are one or two errors in his book for other dates of slab production, too.

They are legitimately scarce, but you will have a hard time finding anyone that will pay a premium for them,in my experience.

Agree. They look too similar to other more common old green label PCGS slabs.

I would say they are as scarce as the Doily, perhaps even moreso, but I agree that they are a minor "Variety" that will not recieve much attention. I predict that their value will increase along with all other two piece holders steadily through the years, but a doily will continue to be much more sought after...simply because it's a serious abberation in design. They just don't have the appeal. People have a hard time distinguishing between all the "Old Green Holders.' Especially the frame in a slab ones. To most people this holder, the 2.5 and the 2.0 are the same thing, even though they have minor differences.

I believe Oreville may want a heads up on this one.

I agree with Billet7 with the exception that I believe that the PCGS 3.5 slabs are much more scarce than the doilies. Even so, I agree that the PCGS 3.5 will possibly/probably never catch up to the PCGS doily slab price-wise as it is too similar to the other slab designs to garner great excitement.

This simply gives me the opportunity to finally complete my box of 20 for the PCGS 3.5 at a reasonable cost to match my box of 20 that I already have for the PCGS doilies which was mostly acquired years ago at a reasonable cost.

How do you distinguish the 3.5s from the more common OGHs?

    Hmmm.

I bought one of these, or at least I think it's one of these, off Teletrade.

It's the old wrap slab with rounded corners yet the PHOTO looks like there is some perferations near the top.

Once it arrives I'll know for sure ut it kinda makes me wonder, die cut corners with perferations? Maybe a new type? Or maybe a sloppy die cutting?

Whatever. It's not a Sample Slab (which I'm sure would garner more attention), it's just a Slab Generation Type.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Same slab. Look at your serial number compared to mine above. Mine was slabbed 127 coins away from yours!! Probably slabbed the same day in December of 1989!!

    Those danged serial numbers!

I wish they made just a bit more sense but they just bounce all over the place.

    You'd think this one:

Was slabbed 480,000 before either of ours.

Won one of these off HA.com. Thought it was a gen 2, wasn't paying that much attention, just looked at it after receiving it today, and realized it's a gen 3.5... the sharper label and clouded insert around the coin tipped me off.

    Linky

Someone should start keeping a pop report for these. If there isn't already one, I'll volunteer to make a thread and keep tabs on 'em.

There's the possibility this was reholdered. Don't they keep the same cert. when reholdered?

You would think so, but I don't think it works that way. I thought the first 3 or 4 digits of the cert number were drawn randomly at the start of every day. Say monday's would be 6801 so the first coin graded on monday would be 68010000, the second 68010001, the third 6801002, etc. and so on and so forth. This would continue up through 68019999
