I heard a story once when Mickey Mantle was a rookie he made a great basket catch. After the play Joe Dimaggio came over and said to him. "Great catch kid...don't ever do it again."

Rickey Henderson did them all of the time. He'd make basket catches on routine fly balls. I don't ever recall him dropping one, but he certainly must have at some point.

I think that more players should go back to catching the ball with BOTH hands......the other night Toronto's centerfielder ran past a ball that he tried to catch one handed (the ball went off the tip of his glove) and an infielder plain out drop one that he tried to one hand.......
  • Larry Herndon from the 1984 Tigers loved to use the basket catch.
