tournaise silver coin

image

just bought this french medieval silver coin, a Gros tournaise , or Grosso , Groot or Groat.
average weight 4 grammes , average diameter 26mm , 950/1000 silver content
these were minted all over Europe and played an important role in the late medieval times (1200 - 1400)
introduced in Venice as a Grosso in 1200 and quickly copied by other countries.

the 12 fleur de lis stand for the counter value of 12 deniers or light pennies, and in the middle a sort of picture of the city of Tours ,
the former french capital and financial center in old Europe

on the other side, a Greek cross and saying this coin was issued under the reign of french King Philippe IV (born 1268- died 1314) ,
thats the guy who kicked the Templars out of France and seized there belongings,

when the pope in Rome protested, he was arrested by Philippe , and a new pope was installed by him in Avignon - France.

just wanted to share, hope you like it ?

So a $100 will still buy something nice. Good one.
