My $500 Half Dollar hunt results, with pics :-)

piecesofmepiecesofme Posts: 6,669 ✭✭✭
Well, after waiting nearly 2 weeks for my order of $500 in Halves to arrive, I got around to searching it today and this is what I came up with.
1 1964 Kennedy and a 1912 Australian Penny, which goes for around $5 on eBay. What was odd is they were both in the same roll...what are the freakin odds of that???
Not bad I guess, free 90% coin and a coin worth $5 that I paid .50 for.

At first, I was like...what the hell is this? Immediately looked it up on eBay and said, "hey $5 is $5." image

I know a little bit about foreign coins and I have no doubt that that 1912 penny would not bring an opening bid if you listed it at 99¢. It is too corroded. That $5 price would be for a no problem VF.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

    Got quoins?

I'd be happy with that box. Interesting foreign coin - I like to get them. As long as you have a bag dump bank then good deal.

How do you know I wont do what alot/most eBayers do and take a fuzzy picture of the better side of the coin and say sold as is and get top $?
I've seen this scenario happen too many times and know that a downright ugly damn coin can end up going for a ridiculous amount (in this case it would be $5-10 lol)...and the buyer is happier than the Village People at a gay pride parade.
There's more people out there that don't know a thing about the hobby and are happy with what they get than us 30k or so that circulate on this site (and that's profiles, not necessarrily an actual 30k people image )...consider yourself schooled.

Nice grab. Can't complain with that.

You could have come up with just dirty fingers like I did a couple weeks ago going through $1000 face of Halves. image

the penny has a nice, old rich brown color. it doesn't look too bad.

I don't see how this is worth the hassle. For the time you took to do this, and for the time it will take to undo this, you could have worked OT at your job or researched a stock and made 10X more money. Heck, you could have walked down the street with your head down and looked for lose change and did better. I found 35c in my 7/11 today. 10 people stepped right over it.

For the eight hours I spent looking through 4070 halves, I am up ~$300 in silver and a couple of proof coins. There is no OT in retirement, and I stay far away from things I don't understand (stock market).

What about the drive time back and forth? Why not get educated? You have the time. To each their own.

But people wonder why banks are sticking us with all kinds of fees. Someone at the bank had to waste an hour processing all these coins.

Some people do it for just the fun/heck of it. just that simple. and if we find a little silver here and there that's icing on the cake.

Agreed. I have no problem going through a box of halves. I find it exciting to find some silver. I doubt I would get that kind of excitement at work, and if I did, I was doing something I shouldn't. image

Talking about banks.......... I gave the kid behind the counter a $2 dollar bill and a $1 Ike dollar, the kid told me I was turning in fake money! "He had never seen them before!" He called over a manager to "look at" them.

Really..... 22 years old and you have never seen a two dollar bill or an Ike dollar? Crazy.....

If memory serves me right, although I can't make it out from the pic, that should be a 1912 H penny you found!

May I ask what that means, I know nothing about foreign coins. Thanks.

I go to the bank every Friday morning. I always ask if they have any halves. Today I got 10, nothing special. Last week I got a roll plus 10 coins and had one 40 percent coin. Week before they had 10 dollars worth and I got 2 64s and 3 40% coins. They know I'll take any they have so they keep them for me and I don't take them back. I also get all the $2 bills and Ike dollars. I separate out any silver or errors and put the rest in a big bucket. I figured out that since the bank only pays .025% on a saving account that converting stuff to halves is not costing me that much, I get enough silver to outweigh the interest they would pay and since they aren't that easy to grab and spend it's kind of a forced savings account for me. I'm happy to have a few thousand dollars in halves. I'm not going to put them up my mattress though since I don't think they'd be all that comfortable to sleep on.
