  • Paul was a star athlete at my high school where he was actually known more for his basketball play than for his baseball abilities. For years, there were photos of him proudly displayed in our trophy case at school.

After high school, he played for our local American Legion team that went to the American Legion World Series and finished fifth in the nation. Tom Lundgren, the current Yankees senior vice president for baseball operations, was actually considered to be a better pitching prospect than Paul on that team.

Everyone who knew Paul said what a classy guy he was and how he always had a smile and a very positive attitude. Very sad to lose such a great guy.

You know you're getting old when guys you used to get autographs from as a kid start to pass on in bunches. First Harmon Killebrew, who was a Hall of Famer for nice guys when it came to autographs, and now Paul Splittorff, who was also a wonderful IP signer.

    RIP gentlemen.
