1956 Uncut Sheets

The latest Clean Sweep Auction is offering uncut sheets from Series 3 and 4 from the 1956 Topps Baseball set. In the description they state that an elderly couple approached their table at a show with these sheets which they'd had in their possession since 1956.

Some numbers. Each sheet contains 110 cards with 60 cards double printed on the sheet and 50 cards single printed.

I posted about this over on the 1956 thread on the Registry Forum last night and some questions were raised. Primarily... as far as I know, no cards have ever been distinguished as single prints or double prints for this set. Also, there are no checklist cards on either sheet. How were they printed?

Is it possible that this is only a half sheet and the other half of the sheet would be the opposite of these with the cards single printed double printed on the other half and vice versa?

I know jmoran19 has answered uncut sheet questions before. Hopefully he or someone else with knowledge can chime in with some answers or theories.

Not nitpicking, but for clarity, wouldn't that actually be 30 cards double printed on the sheet and 50 cards single printed?

don't listen to that jmoran19 dude, he's so full of it his eyes are brown image

I'm not an expert on 1956 but series 1 is 100 different cards and the uncut sheet below (I'm pretty sure it's a half sheet as mentioned) verifies that with the far right column being DP's, the other half could have a different row double printed but no matter what a full 220 card sheet would have some DP's.

Just check my 1989 Beckett price guide and they do indicate some DP's in the first series but they are NOT consistent, they saw Warren Spahn is a DP but Ted W. and Koufax aren't, they are in the same column (#1), it also indicates that the column with Ernie Banks and Jackie R. are DP's so there has to be other variations of the first series sheet. JOhn

Edit to add, Some of the cards in the 2 far right columns are noted as DP's in the book. I pretty sure they also won't notate cards as DP or SP unless they physically saw the uncut sheet(s).

It is widely believed that the 1956 Checklist cards were printed by replacing the Bob Cerv and Charley Neal cards for part of the press run. It is also possible they were on the other half of the 220-card full sheet.

You are correct sir. Series 3 and 4 contain 80 cards each.

Thanks for responding. I knew you were the go to guy for this.

I looked at a couple of old Beckett Guides too. 1987 doesn't list any DPs, but the 1997 version lists several. All from series 1 as you stated. As a 1956 aficionado, I just think it's really neat confirming the positioning of the tough cards from the set.

Also, thank you to Mr. Lemke for the checklist info. That would definitely make the checklists short printed, correct?
