Is there a reference for darkside coin and medal symbolism?

I posted a few months back about starting a type set of coins and medals with a "sower" design theme. This little desire has become an interesting distraction. I would like to discover, however, why the "sower" was chosen for particular coin (s) or medal(s). Is there a reference available that discusses coin and medal symbolism?
