Busting some vintage Topps baseball packs...

The mailman brought me a few nice things. Which one to rip first? '75, '77, '79 or '80? EDIT: Results of the bust are pictured below.

Note the Sandberg rookie (back) in the '83 Topps grocery rack pack. Also second year Mattingly & Boggs cards showing too. And say what you want about '87 Topps, I love' em.

Sorry for the poor quality pics.

Thanks. This is the first time I've bought vintage packs to rip (bought at BBCE) unless you count late 80's junk wax trying to find Griffey RCs or Frank Thomas NNOFs. image

Rick, I had a few of your '77 packs flagged to bid on and missed the end of the auction by 4 minutes.

I busted the '79 cello. Here are the highlights. Sorry for the glare, as I don't have a scanner.

    Evans is the gum card.

Best card in the pack, Gary Carter.

I busted the '79 cello, one pack of '77, and the '82 and '87 rack packs. The '79 was the best by far, unless you count a '82 Terry Francona RC.

Busted the '80 Topps today. Nothing great, but the best card, the Pete Rose, was one of the gum cards (large stain on back).

I opened the '75 Topps (regulars, not mini) today. Nothing amazing, but I'm happy.

Brooks is in really nice condition.

Well this looks like a common, right?

    image

Ta-dah! Anyone know anything about '75 blank backs? Are they rare at all?

image 1975 was always my favorite.

The Brooks Robinson looks well centered. How is the top left corner? It looks like it might have a slight ding there from the picture.

I wish I had an answer of the 1975 blank back. Hopefully someone else does have an idea as to how rare that is.

Not common but not rare either. Even though I like to collect them and just keep blank backs aside, they dont go for much, if any premium.

The Robinson corner looks better in person than in the photo. Quite sharp. What do you think, maybe a PSA 8? Conception's centerinng is dead on, looks like a 9, IMO.

Not sure what, if any, I'll grade. I just really like opening the packs, especially the cheap 80's ones.

For the most part, no. I mostly remember opening '88-'91 with '89 being the main year. Although the first CARD I remember owning was an '81 Donruss.

I think the Brooks Robinson could get a PSA 8. Concepcion does look strong.

I haven't graded anything myself yet either as I like to collect the cards raw and put them in albums. As I'm sure others on the board could tell you, I don't like to open any vintage packs. I enjoy collecting them unopened.

    Thanks for sharing your rip.

I love the '81 Donruss -- especially the Carew/Brett combo card. That was the re-birth year of my BBC collecting life. My "kid" years were '62-'68 and then again from '81-'91.

Yep, I bought the entire '81 Donruss set for about $8 recently. Great set, IMO.
