My picks and the reason I think this.
It is time for Nascar to honor some of the independent drivers that have meant so much to Nascar's success. The drivers that week to week tried to survive and bring home a little money dispite not having big budgets to work with.
I can think of 3 drivers right off the top of my head from the earlier days of the sport. All 3 were class acts in my humble opinion.
Dave Marcis
Wendell Scott
G.C. Spencer
Big name drivers - MMMMM
Bobby Isaacs - One of 3 big name drivers to compete in all the races weekly. Richard Petty and David Pearson (driving for Holman-Moody) were the other 2.
Buddy Baker - Week after week consistently good.
Fred Lorenzen - First Driver to win at the 4 major speedways, Charlotte, Daytona, Darlington, Atlanta. The man was something else on big tracks in his Holman-Moody Ford.
Cale Yarborough - Pedal to the metal wide open.
Others,
Harry Hyde - Car builder for Bobby Isaacs #71 K&K Dodge.
Cotton Owens - Car owner for Dodges of David Pearson and Buddy Baker to name two.

<< <i>Good stuff, Melvin. Thanks for sharing. Hey, since you know so much about racing, why don't you educate the board on some great racing sets? I know NOTHING about any of these and would find that interesting. >>
I never really got into the Nascar racing sets. In 1988 I had the chance to buy two complete, in the box, factory sets of the Maxx Myrtle Beach sets for $14.00 each and decided they would never amount to anything. I bought two of the ProSet golf sets instead. I think that explains my entire sports card history and why I have thousands of cards that aren't worth anything . I was watching a few minutes of the Nascar Hall of Fame inductions on the Speed Channel the other night and some guy had a vintage David Pearson card he was trying to get autographed. My card history from 1986 through 1991 was basically a flop. I have mostly baseball sets a few football and basketball and 1 or 2 hockey sets which are hard to come by in the South. I hope someone else will follow through on this question for you.
A side note. From 1964 through 1972 I probably went to a little over 100 Nascar races. I loved it back then.

<< <i>The Rapid Roman Richie Evans - a 9 time NASCAR Modified Champion (including 8 straight times). The only NASCAR driver that officially has had his number retired (#61). Already a member of the International Motorsports HOF. >>
Yes it is time Nascar recognized someone outside the South. Although not familiar with The Rapid Roman myself, records speak for themselves. There a driver from up around Michigan or somewhere around there, Sal someone or the other that probably deserves a mention. I could Google him but trying to do this from memory. There is also Red Farmer from Alabama and part of the Alabama Gang that was a legend in Late Model Sportsman Nascar. There also is the West Coast Nascar. It goes on and on.
