1956 Mantle questions

Disclaimer:
I am not big into graded cards. I can appreciate those that are, but I prefer raw cards - except for bigger star cards like the one below.

This PSA 2 Mantle just ended on Ebay. Admitting I do not know a ton about the nuances of PSA grading, I've looked at this card over and over trying to figure out what makes it only a "2". It looks better than that to me. Thoughts? I see the bottom-right wrinkle on the back, but the card was described as having "no creases". Am I missing something more obvious? Help me understand please.

(Yes, I bought it. I like the way it looks)

Maybe that is tape residue in the center of the back?

I agree with Mike on the tape residue. From my experience, it seems that a card with any sort of wrinkle or crease will start at 4 and can only go down from there so the wrinkle starts it at 4. The corners and tape residue brings it to a 2. IMO, if you paid the going rate for a 2, I think you did pretty well. The centering is great and if the fairly nominal residue on the back doesn't bother you, I think it's a very nice card. I have a PSA 2 Ted Williams from this set with a huge crease through the front of the card. It's not even close to the Mantle 2 that you have. Enjoy the card. - Kevin M.

I do agree with the above post. Looks like the OP DID pay "PSA 2" money for the card. That being said, I think you did GREAT on that purchase.

I would buy cards all day long that looked like that if I could get them for PSA 2 money.

I believe on the top right corner of the back near "Yankees" there is paper loss - that will get you the 2.

    Still nice card

Wow! Great looking 2! Now...crack it out of there and let Mick breathe.
    I love raw vintage.
  • It is definitely the combo of the tape residue and the paper loss top left back. I do not know what you paid, but it is one of the finest 2's you will ever see. There are many collectors who look for cards just like this one. Great immediate front eye appeal for a reasonable price. I think you did well young jedi knight. My ten year old son is with me, and he just goes nuts for the Star Wars lingo!!!!!

Awesome card without the awesome price!! Good job!
  • Well, I do appreciate the comments about it being a decent purchase guys. Thanks.

I'll be darned...I totally missed the residue on the back. I stared at it so hard that I think I looked right past it. image

I'm excited to have won the card.

Still a nice card despite the following comments...and I hate to say it, but that card probably looks worse in hand than on the internet scan. Even an undoctored scan, can cover up various.defects on the card.

I once sold a lot of 1951 Bowman commons that had extensive water damage and staining, but they looked pretty good from a scan, and
I thoroughly described the water damage and staining in the ebay description, so the buyer was happy with the purchase. Those cards probably would have graded around a PSA 1 or 2. See what I'm saying?

That being said, hopefully ya get the card and it looks just as good as the scan.
