Gary Carter has brain tumors

Just saw this on the wire.....sure hope they are not malignant.

Report: Gary Carter has brain tumorsEmail Print Comments33 ESPNNewYork.com

Former New York Mets catcher Gary Carter has been diagnosed with four small brain tumors, according to the New York Daily News.

The Hall of Famer will have surgery at Duke University Hospital within the next few days, the paper reported.

According to the Daily News, a source close to Carter, 57, said the former catcher had been complaining of headaches and forgetfulness recently. An MRI on Saturday revealed the tumors.

It won't be known until the surgery whether the tumors are malignant, according to the paper.

Carter spent 19 years with the Mets, Expos, Giants and Dodgers. He hit .262 with 324 career home runs and 1,225 RBIs.

He has been managing at Palm Beach Atlantic College this past year, near his home in Palm Beach, Fla.

That is horrible news! I wish him the best. He still has a lot of life to live.
  • Agreed; Gary has been a card colector and has raised a ton of money for charity.

WOW -- I can't tell you what a punch in the gut it was when I heard the news ~ but ~ like Sam said above my prayers are that this was caught early, they are operable and he will be able to use the experience to bring awareness like he has with many other causes.
His faith will be a rock for him and his family -- it will help with whatever the near future brings.
Prayer is important to him so please direct some his way.

A high percentage of primary brain tumors can be removed and the person treated to recovery. Though they will of course lose some things. If its a secondary cancer to another primary in his body, that's really bad news. I hope its something that can be taken care of and he can have the best recovery possible.

I've known a few patients of Dr. Friedman. In fact, I thought of him before I even opened this thread. He'll give Gary the best possible chance of beating this.

Bad news, hopefully they caught it early enough. Prayers go out to Gary to make a full recovery.

His playing days were a little before my time, but I've had the opportunity to watch Mr. Carter manage multiple games the past few years. First with the St. Lucie Mets and later with Palm Beach Atlantic. In fact, I watched him manage just a few weeks before the Tumor stories were released.

Hope everything can be treated, I would love to watch him manage for many years to come!

Awful news. I vaguely remember hearing he had a health problem but didn't realize it was so serious.
I remember when he was a player it seemed like he always had a smile on his face.

  • I read about Gary Carter having brain cancer I think about 2 months ago - if that - but now this news from "brave to extremely grave" is brand new to me. So sad.
  • wow, does not look good but hopefully Carter and others in his situation can pull through.

Very sad indeed. One of my all time favorites. I grew up watching him play in Montreal then had to watch him on tv playing for the Mets and so on.

Brain cancer is either the most or second most painful types of cancer to suffer with. Since he is that bad, we can only pray that God takes him peacefully.

    God bless Gary Carter

Carter was a great player and an even greater guy. He was the only player on that '86 Mets team that I liked. Prayers to him and his family.

I had a MRI for the very same reasons this past year. Luckily for me, it was not a tumor.

    Terrible news.

I can think back many years when I had an Aunt pass from cancer. It was crazy because not many people had even heard of it,

    and my family had not.

Fast forward to now, and just about every single person I know has multiple stories and family members that have cancer.

where is the cure? how many people need to die???

He cancelled an appearance at a card show in the Bay Area early last year the notice was taped up on a sheet of paper on the portable ticket booth that read "Not appearing due to brain tumor" smooth. He went to Fullerton out here on the left coast and I remember a fourth of July game in '90 when he was with the Giants and got five hits and homered off of Maddux!

We have to live knowing that people we love, care about, and know, are just starting life when they move on to the next place.

Still don't understand fully the suffering part, probably never will. The only thing that makes sense is to use others stories in our own lives, and never take one thing for granted.

  • Unfortunately this does not sound good at all.

My best friend's mother was diagnosed with a brain tumor in May 2010 (about one year before Gary), and they said the typical life expectancy was roughly 12-18 months. From what has been public information, she appeared to have been diagnosed at the same rough stages as Gary. She had a courageous battle for 20 months and passed away last week. My best wishes go out to the Carter family.
