I ran into these and don't know what they are. Here is the proof set:

This coin looks like a plated copy to me:

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks. I finally found it in Krause. I knew it was an arab set but since I can't read arabic I needed some help. Any market for these?

    Well, there's you image
Seriously though, I still pick up world proof sets if they are attractive and inexpensive.

Someone asked me to check it out so I haven't bought it yet. There are 2 of them on ebay BIN at $290 but there were none as sold listed in the completed auctions. Krause lists mintage at 3200. The largest coin is sterling and has about .6 ozt ASW so at least there is that. I'm going to make an offer and see if I can get it for the right price. It's a nice looking set but it's missing the COA.

  • I wouldn't pay anything close to $290 for the set.
Which is not to say it isn't worth that much to a specialist in the field, it's just that it is more than I would care to spend on a lark (which is what I consider my collecting of world proof sets.)

No doubt. Now if I'd seen some completed auctions at $290 I'd be excited. The sterling coin is worth about $20 so I'm going to offer her $35. That's all it's worth to me. Thanks for the help.

Oh yea, 2007 Krause lists it for $95 which is more realistic to me, if you can even find a buyer.

It's Krause PS-5 with KM-76 - KM-81 coins listed under Oman in my 2007 book.

Your coin is a fake 1736 8 escudo from the Lima mint. It should be gold to even have a chance of being real.

Thanks. I could tell from the plating is was probably a fake. Odd thing was she has what appears to be a real 1739 Russian copper Denga in pretty good shape.
