I printed out a Paypal label on the 8th of May and dropped it at the post office the same day
in the depository box. This is how I've always done it. As of today, it still says the same thing, so I'm assume it's
lost. Of course I explained that to the buyer and would refund his money. Of course he is upset and says
money is of no concern; he wants the card. I'll probably get a neg. and he'll get a refund as well.
Is this package definitely lost or held hostage somewhere?
Has this happened to you and what was the outcome?

That is why I prefer to pay the 80-cents and WATCH the clerk
scan the thing.
I do give many items to my carrier and he now scans them when
he takes them away. With cheap stuff I just stamp them, put the
DC-ticket on them, and put them in my big mailbox. The expensive
stuff I escort to the PO counter.
.........
Your item still might show up.
10-days does not absolutely mean it's lost.
...........
Everytime I hear of missing mail, I now think of the Richard Dreyfuss
scene in "Weeds," where he plays a mail carrier. He opens the spare
bedroom door and the room is piled high with bags of mail that he has
stolen over the years.

I understand what you're saying to a point, but whether you pay $.19 or .$80 for DC will have no bearing on the chances that the package will be lost in the mail, and almost certainly will not dissuade a buyer from opening a claim. Whether the tracking number says 'label was printed', or 'pacakage was accepted at the post office' is of no concern to someone who still hasn't received their cards.

Obviously, delivery is the only thing that matters in a claim.
I just prefer the green sticker AND a "Scan Me" label. I think they
have a better chance of being scanned en route so that the impatient
buyers can track the progress online.
I live on the east coast and when I send to the west coast sometimes the next tracking update does not appear for days because the next stop is usually half way across the country. But 10 days does seem a bit much.

<< <i>Acceptance at the PO or electronic acceptance is often all that shows until actual delivery. Unlike UPS or other carriers, the USPS usually doesn't scan packages in transit. If you insured it on line file a claim and you will get a refund. >>

Folks tell me that over-and-over.
Yet, I cannot recall ever having mailed an item
that was not tracked at every stop.
Even the EBAY tracking link always shows me
exactly where the item was last.

When I print labels at home and bring them to the post office myself, I just drop them in the mailbox as long as the envelope or box will fit.
But sometimes my father takes stuff to the post office for me, and he waits on line, simply hands the package over to the clerk, and it gets scanned for acceptance. He does not have to pay anything and they do not give him a receipt. This is very consistent and has been repeated several times over the last few months.
Here's just one example:

So you don't have to pay the extra 61 cents just to get a package scanned for acceptance, but you do have to wait on line at the post office.
