OT - Played in the John Daly $100,000 Invitational this past weekend, w/pics

Played in the John Daly invitational this weekend at the Silver Star Resort and Casino. The casino flew me in on Friday and the reception dinner and pairings party was Friday night. Got to hang with JD a little on Friday night and had breakfast at the same table as him on Saturday morning at the golf course. Extremely nice guy. He had a great sense of humor and just acted like any normal joe with regard to life and the sports world in general. We talked about kids, his weight loss (he weighs 185 now by the way), other sports, Tiger Woods, etc....

He put on a little Q and A clinic on the driving range before we started on Saturday and he was just as candid and forthcoming with all of his answers to people's questions. He looks a little rough and weathered as you can expect, but hopefully he'll get his game back together and compete again on the PGA Tour. He can really hit it by the way.

I tied for the individual low round of the tourney at 68 (from the white tees which only played 6100 yards, lol), but got screwed on the blind draw A, B, C, D format and only got tied for 3rd place for our team. That paid $2000 though so not bad.

I won $7000 at the casino too so it was a good trip. JD was playing 3 $500 slot machines at the same time in the high limit area after the reception Friday night. He looked like an octopus trying to feed hundreds into all of the machines and puch all those buttons at the same time, lol. He told me that they pay him 75K to do those tourneys and he usually leaves at least another 75K at the casino, lol. Like I say, he doesn't pull any punches. He's sober now and wouldn't drink though. All in all a great experience.

That's Daly's 7 year old son in those pictures by the way. Little John was hitting balls next to his dad during the little Q and A.

Isn't it bad golf etiquette to snap pics during the backswing?

I'm no golfer, I was just wondering. I recall Tiger going ballastic a few years ago at one of the majors I think, so maybe it doesn't matter at a lower key event.

I used my phone but it wouldn't have mattered for this. He was just beating balls on the driving range and answering questions from the crowd.
  • Daly is awesome. Great pics!

Looks like Daly has lost a lot of weight. Good for him!

    Pasted from Wikipedia:

In 2006, Daly revealed in the last chapter of his autobiography that he has had great difficulty with a gambling problem.[1] He claims to have lost between US$50 and $60 million over the past 15 years. This includes losing $1.5 million in October 2005, after winning half that amount at the WGC-American Express tournament, most of it lost on $5,000 Las Vegas slot machines.[11] Daly has been able to pay his gambling debts mostly through making more paid public appearances and through sponsorship opportunities.

So...actually they "pay him" nothing, they really get him for free. Very sad indeed.
