Setting up at a Card Show - and I need advice

Hello friends,

I'm setting up at a card show this weekend (in Arlington, TX) and I have several $1/cards to set out. Would you recommend organizing these by the player or would you keep them organized by brand & year?

Thank you in advance for your responses.

  • I am a self proclaimed expert in $1 and 25 cent cards!!!!

    Just kidding...

My last show I moved $1400 out of my 25 cent box and $1, what I did was pretty much have a decent sized sign showing people I have those boxes....

And just put the cards in boxes, said "Serial Number/Gu/Au/etc whatever" on the front of the box, that was best for me.

I had 0 organization to them whatso ever I had multiple sports random stars junk gu etc lol

Hi - I always kept one display in the middle with a mix of all the top high dollar stuff in it. Then another area for super star displays Example: Ryan, Rose, Schmidt, Seaver, Jackson, Brett, Ripken, Pujols, Rodgriguez, Jeter, Howard, Griffey Jr. etc etc. The commons I usually would keep them in order (Year, Card manufacturer, card #). They will get out of order from people riffling through them and I would reorganize them which was cumbersome. However people would be impressed that I could find something so quickly if I had it or not. Since your going to Arlington I would suggest having Josh Hamilton somewhere visible in the mix. You will get a lot of requests for him. Same with who ever else is popular on the Rangers and even the Astros teams.

Also I always kept my laptop handy so I could look up checklists if someone would ask if I had a common of a certain player I could bam. Look it right up and know exactly were to look. Within 2 minutes I could find any card (if I had it). Also I wouldn't use price tags because I have seen and caught people switching prices on cards by pulling the old switcharoo.

Good Luck. I hope you make a killing!

pile them in random stacks on a $1 table/area. people love to rifle through these looking for stuff. geez, i have seen guys spend over an hour going through this junk....some will spend a coiuple of bucks while others will dump $20 or more. hopefully you will get lucky.

I don't know what all you have, but if you have '90's inserts of high-profile players you will positively kill it at this show if your stuff is priced right. Most guys (dealers) either have overpriced EX-MT vintage, or are addicted box rippers who are looking to sell off their post-2002 commons and stars. If you're peddling 90's stuff you will have a niche that, in all likelihood, almost nobody else at the show will be competing for.

OK I have a question. What do stars of the 1980's like Brett, Jackson, Carew, Seaver, etc go for? I am talking cards that would not get a PSA 10 but maybe a 7 or 8. Should they go in a 25 cent box or a dollar box?
    Thanks,

You could definitely move them at 25 cents, but you might be able to sell some of the nicer stuff out of dollar boxes.

I try to sort those types of boxes by brand and year. Sometimes someone finds similar cards mixed in with what they are looking for that they wouldn't find otherwise if sorted by player.
  • Living in DFW does not make me an expert on anything -0- but since that show is about as big as we get -- I'd go this way --

Anything pre-1980 to be seperated by years -- post 1980 by names if that make sense and then by categories and sports.

And it's OK to have a misc box as well of inserts that don't fit any theme.

As its been said -- if your cards book at $1.50 and you're selling at $1 good luck -- those should be 25-50 cents. But if the cards are 3-8 dollars then a $1 box/table is great

Fantastic advice all around, friends. Thank you for taking the time to chime in. If any of you local guys decide to attend the show - please stop by and say hello - I'll be sitting at the table w/ all of the $1 boxes.

If it's a decent sized show and you are going with bargain boxes, I'd say sort by sort and leave it at that. First, you have people messing up your order anyways and secondly, I think you may get sales from people who look at everything rather than looking for a specific card. You can always offer discounts for buying 5 cards or ten to move a few more.

Have one box that SCREAMS: 50% off box. Of course, make your $1 items $2. People love getting a deal.

  • 80% off box works better than 75 or 50, and you can put any star inserts in there, that was another box I moved some ridiculous amount out of. All those $10 booking autos sell @ 2$ all day in that box!
