Great-looking cards, Mike. For my money, few cards look better than high-quality '71's.

    Good Lord those are sharp!

I put my 71 set on the backburner, may have to dust it off and get back to work.

    Thanks guys.

I'll have a couple of hundred Ex/Mt doubles (and some PSA 6 stars) after I merge these into my set this weekend. If anybody is doing a 6-ish set and has interest in a big lot, please let me know...

Great job on the 71's Mike. image

I'm worse than everyone else who posted. I couldn't even get myself to start on the 71 set and skipped to the 70 and 69 sets. Unfortunately, I've finished the 69 set and only have 60 cards or so to finish the 70 set so I'll have to make a decision...either 71 or move on to 68. image

Nice pick-up Mike. It's always nice when you can pick up high grade raw on eBay. That set is a bear to build in NM-MT. I'm down to less than 100 but it took 4 high grade sets plus purchasing many 8's at near VCP average.

No wonder I had trouble winning cards-you took them all. Congrats on some nice pickups. I did win a few cards that you apparently did not need.

Wow, that Torre would be a great card to get in 9
    You gonna send them in?
  • Bosox1976Bosox1976 Posts: 8,564 ✭✭✭✭✭
I think I'll send most of them in - but I honestly don't know the difference between a 6-7-8 on these 71's. The few graded that I have all look about the same despite being 1-2 grades apart.

Can you get 8's with any white showing (routinely)? I see quite a few on ebay, but honestly I have seen 6's that look as good.

Having looked at the scans you posted - those are some GREAT looking PSA 7's & 8's. I would have guessed a few of those would have graded higher.

For reasons I've never been able to fully explain, '71's in the NM range always seem to look better scanned than they do in person. It could be that this bunch just got killed in the grading room, but it's also possible (from my experience) that these grades are at least roughly in line with what the cards look like in-hand.

I think this is definitely true with these. I also feel like it's one of the sets that PSA seems to grade the hardest on. That said, any card from this set in a PSA 8 or higher is a victory in my book.

I thought you had a couple of 8.5's in there but still nice grades considering how tough these are.
  • nam812nam812 Posts: 10,586 ✭✭✭✭✭
PSA is so terrified to use the 8.5 grade on 1962s and 1971s.
  • Bosox1976Bosox1976 Posts: 8,564 ✭✭✭✭✭
As I said above, I really have a hard time telling apart 6-7-8 's on this set.

I've got most of the stars in this set graded in that range and I can't discern much difference at all. At least 62's are consistently tough....

Not bad for this year. I've resubbed cards that have enough value and didn't get the grade I was expecting. A good percentage of the time they bump. I think this year more than any other relies on subjectivity for asigning a grade. How much chipping is too much chipping for an 8? That depends on the opinion of the grader since there's no quantitative criteria assigned for this.
