Undervalued cards based on population

There are many rookie cards of our favorite/hof players over the past 30 years, but some don't get the "love/price" that some others get and the reasons vary. Here is a short list of rookie cards that, in my humble opinion, seem a little undervalued:

1) 1982 Fleer Cal Ripken - difficult to find a PSA 10 and only 14 9.5's exist for BGS. This certainly could be the most valuable as the years/grading go on.

2) 1983 Donruss Ryne Sandberg - The most difficult on PSA and BGS (10, 9.5, respectively)

3) 1987 Leaf Greg Maddux

4) 1985 Leaf Kirby Puckett

5) 1985 Fleer Kirby Puckett

6) 1985 Fleer Roger Clemens

7) 1981 OPC Kirk Gibson

8) 1989 Topps Tiffany Randy Johnson (This one could explode at some point, centering is awful)

9) 1988 Topps Tiffany Tom Glavine

10) 1989 OPC Randy Johnson

Let me hear your thoughts.

Thats a good list. I would also put in alot of early 80's OPC cards.

One HOF'er that doesn't get much love is Dennis Eckersley. There are only 5 Eckersley basic sets (rookie card pop only 56) on the registry and none of them are near completion.

I would say the 1984 Topps Mattingly RC is undervalued.

That is an interesting list, but I lack confidence that the population
of many of those cards will remain inelastic as time passes.

We can speculate how many/few cases are stashed, but we don't
    know for sure.

I agree on the O-pee-chee call. Most of the cards out of packs are brutal which makes for a card graders dream set.

Let's face it if every card out of the pack or sealed set comes mint in the long run there will not be much premium on a graded version. If you have hard to find cards that come in poor condition that is recipe you want if getting cards graded.

One card I have noticed starting to pop is the 1986 Topps Tiffany Bo Jackson. I think there are other cards like this hidden that will move at some point.

The 1984-1991 Topps Tiffany sets, 1988 Score Glossy sets, and 89-90 Bowman Tiffany sets may be the cards to have from the bloat-era. They all had fairly low print-runs, compared to the regular issues.

I've noticed that a few of the Tiffany era cards are already selling for more than their historically more popular counterparts.

Very true...I recently sold a PSA 9 Griffey Jr Bowman Tiffany rookie for $225.00 I bought it a little while back for $150.00 so prices are on the upside.

It's not universal though, which is odd:

    For PSA 10 auction prices...
    1986 Tiffany Canseco < 1986 Donruss Canseco
    1986 Tiffany Bonds > 1986 Donruss Bonds
    1989 Tiffany Griffey < 1989 UD Griffey
    1989 Tiffany Johnson > 1989 UD Johnson

Unique cards of big players and also the chase cards in some regional sets are the most undervalued cards out there IMO...
    ie.
1925 FC-Unc. Holland Ice Cream #16 Roger Peckinpaugh (1 card known)
1923 V117 Maple Crispette #15 Casey Stengel (1 card known)
1933 R238 US Caramel #16 Lindy Lindstrom (2 cards known)
1916 Tango Eggs Ty Cobb (1 card known)
1895 Just So Cy Young (rookie) (1 card known)
1909 Cabanas Pete Hill (1 card known)
1910 Punch Pete Hill (1 card known)
1921 D-Unc. Tip Top Bread Lefty Groves (rookie) (1 card known)
1933 R340 Goudey Sport Kings Babe Ruth (1 card known)
1957 F-Unc. Esslinger Beer Hank Aaron (1 card known)
1917 D-Unc. Merchant Bakery Babe Ruth (1 card known)
    etc. etc.
    etc.
    I can list a hundred+ more.....

I totally agree. As I have stated in past posts, those Tiffany and Glossy rookie cards of future Hall of Famers are very undervalued and are much tougher to find than any 1960s or 1970s cards. For example, if you do an ebay search at any time for 1968 Topps Nolan Ryan -reprint, you will see 100 to 200 cards listed for sale. If you do the same with 1989 Topps Tiffany Randy Johnson, you'd be lucky to see 1 or 2 cards available.

I agree with everyone on the Tiffany and Glossy points. For the great players of the 90's and 00's, I prefer to collect those guys via their minor league issues as opposed to their junk-era mlb rookie cards. For example- '87 Leaf Maddux is a great card, but long-term I'd rather own high grade '86 Procards Pittsfield Cubs. There are a lot of great mid to late 80's Procards issues of future HOFers.

Does anyone really want these cards? To be undervalued, they have to actually be desired.

Only the fakes are over produced? Is that right?

    Interesting list and topic.

    Have no idea.

Where RCs of HOF'ers used to command bucks - the newer community of HOF'ers will have RC's that are so darn overproduced that they may never go for much - which is OK with me.

Sometimes I think we have to pay too much money for cards - in general.
