<< <i>Stunning! That looks nicer than the Krause plate photo.
A couple of questions if you wouldn't mind indulging me:
What is the significance of the two distinct crowns/scepters?
I recall seeing reference to these pieces as "vicarius" talers. Do you know the significance/context of this term? >>
Holy Roman Emperor Joseph I, died in 1711. So, until Joseph's brother Karl (Charles VI) is crowned as Emperor, the Holy Roman Emperors seat is vacant. You can see Joseph's name on the coin as IOSEPHI. Saxony had minted commems to the Emperors after their deaths. I have a 1657 Taler which commemorates the death of Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand. Which on the obverse shows the Emperor on a horse like this 1711 Taler has. You can see the letters FRID : AUG: REX Elector on the reverse which stands for Augustus of Saxony. He was the Elector of Saxony and the King of Poland during 1711. The Crowns are the Crowns of Augustus. The Crown on the left is the Crown of Poland, as you can see the letters REX above the Crown, Scepter and Orb. On the right, you can see the Elector of Saxony Crown with the word ELECTOR above it.
