Need help with a potential buy: raw '52 Topps Mantle

I might be able to get this at a good price and just wanted to know what everyone else thought about it? Is it real, is it trimmed? In works with the seller to somehow get it graded before I buy it, but i wouldn't want to miss this baby if it's real! Thanks for all your thoughts!

Looks trimmed to me. Check out the right edge toward the top of the card.

    Good luck!

Edges on the right side look rolled as if a pair of scissors was used. Back of the card shows that effect even more. I also don't like the look of the card overall.

    Best case: Authentic
    Worst Case: fake

Currently completing the following registry sets: Cardinal HOF's, 1961 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, Bill Mazeroski Master & Basic Sets, Roberto Clemente Master & Basic Sets, Willie Stargell Master & Basic Sets and Terry Bradshaw Basic Set
  • Maybe this is one I'd really have to see in person, hmmm would love to have it slabbed first. Something to talk about i guess, thanks for your thoughts guys.

Do not buy that card without getting it graded first.

That card is a FAKE. DO NOT BUY. http://home.comcast.net/~52mantle/52toppsmantlefake.htm

The black border lines are not proper. Check this website for sound information.

I wouldn't ever buy a Mantle rookie that wasn't graded by either PSA or SGC.

Always looking for Mantle cards such as Stahl Meyer, 1954 Dan Dee, 1959 Bazooka, 1960 Post, 1952 Star Cal Decal, 1952 Tip Top Bread Labels, 1953-54 Briggs Meat, and other Topps, Bowman, and oddball Mantles.

  • There is a guy on ebay selling "authentic looking" reprints printed on "authentic vintage" card stock with an "authentic printing press"... Due to a$$hats like this I wouldn't buy the card if it wasn't in a non-frosted slab.
  • Thanks guys I think i'm just gonna fork over the extra coin and try finding one that has actually been authenticated by a well known company, appreciate all of your help, I'm staying away from this one.

What percentage of people thought "fake" even before clicking on the thread? I know I did...

I agree. This page from Josh's website shows the problem even better - the black border lines are wrong for this version (complete box around Yankees logo) of the card.

That card is 100% fake. It's been artificially aged/worn to look old, but it is definitely a fake.

Take a look at the bottom left corner. On this particular variation of the Mantle (there are two distinct variations of the card), the bottom-left corner should be diaganal, due to a missing pixel at the tip of the corner.

On the card in this thread, the bottom-left corner comes to a point (there is no missing pixel).

It looks trimmed AND fake. Look at that swooping right edge, especially toward the top. I bet it's even modern size instead of like the slightly larger 1952s.

I wouldn't touch that thing if it had nipples on it.

There's basically, in a nutshell, only one way to buy this card raw...you had better have handled, viewed and owned many hundreds of 1952 Topps baseball cards, studied them under a loupe, and handled them to get the feel and the look of genuine cards...and you'd better comprehend the printing processes involved in how cards are printed and how reprints are made including knowledge about offset printing, color separation, and all things such as that so you will know and understand how fakes are made...otherwise you are simply being a glutton for punishment and chances are virtually certain you will get scammed. I also analyze other factors such as who is the seller, the circumstances behind the offering of the card and other possibilities.

Unless you can do all of the above, then ya only buy a card like this slabbed by PSA or perhaps SGC.

What he said.. this card is definitely a fake and isn't representative of either of the two known variations of the card.

    common fake...

the easiest way to easily see its a fake..... is the black line around the image is way too dark compared to the dark parts of the image ie the "R" on the uniform where it meets the black line. in other words....The whole card has a washed out look.... minus the black line

    common fake worthless garbage.
