Can a coin with a hole on it be graded?

jt88jt88 Posts: 2,839 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have a coin with a square hole on it. I am thinking to send it to grade. Can it be graded? Thanks.

edit: The hole is not come from the mint. Someone made a hole on the coin. From the replies looks like if it is genuine then it can be graded as Details or Genuine. Thanks for all the replies.

PCGS will encapsulate it as Genuine.

The only coins with holes that will be encapsulated with a grade are those pieces that always (or nearly always) come holed and are accepted as such, e.g. the 1820 North West Company Tokens.

A holed coin can be given a "details grade" but PCGS won't do it.

Having a coin with a hole on it is never a problem. The problem occurs when the hole is through the coin. image

If we can grade a hole, how about a hole lot of coins?

But seriously, when is PCGS going to start grading encased coins? They are not a hole in a coin, but a coin in a hole.

Yes! Many Chinese coins had holes in them as minted.

I took the OP's question as to be dealing with coins holed outside the mint. Obviously, coins that have holes as part of their original design can be graded.

I did too - that is why I refrained from going down the other path until 'provoked'. LOL

Aww nuts, I took a wrong turn. Could someone in this right-wing political forum tell me where to find the US Coin forum?
