Found a 1914 D Quarter Eagle today.....a few questions...

Hi all. My dad's mother passed away last Fall. He and his siblings have been slowly going through boxes of stuff and dividing it up between one another. His sister sends us some more things every couple of weeks. Some of the things were his mothers, and some were his fathers, who passed away in the 80's. So anyways, today I was going through some of what had been brought to my dad, and found a small box with a pocket watch in it. There was a chain with it, which had a ring on one end with what I though was some kind of charm. The design seemed familiar, so I looked closer at it and realized it was a quarter eagle! Probably not a big deal to many of you, but I was unaware of my dad's parents having any type of gold, and I'm not sure if my grandmother ever knew about it either. At first I thought the coin was somehow glued, or attached to the ring of the chain in some way that would end up with damage on the coin if I tried to remove it. However, I noticed that the ring had a small screw-clasp piece. All I had to do was unscrew the small screw and out fell the coin. My dad knows I like coins, and he was kind enough to give the coin to me.

There still seems to be some detail, but there are many hairlines, etc. So, just wondering some opinions. I know its not a rare date, especially in the condition its in, but what do you all think its worth? Does it look genuine to you? I'm not selling it, but just interested in what grade level it appears to those of you more knowledgeable about such pieces then I am. Also, there black residue as you can see in the photos. Would it be a good idea to try and clean this? Or is it just better off as is? I know cleaning coins is bad, but just am wondering if the black stuff is damaging the coin or will damage it in the future.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Here are the pics. I know, not the best, but its what I have for the moment:

It looks pretty decent to me.
It could just be those hairlines are from circulation or friction from being on the end of a pocket watch for many years.
The dirt in the recessed areas will not harm the coin. Having said that, those $5 Indians were heavily counterfeited.
Yours looks to me to be legit, but I am not an expert.

It's worth it's weight in gold at the very least... roughly $400.

Keep in mind that is just as bullion pricing , what you have is a particularly nice piece of bullion which will always carry a premium based soley on what it is,expect to see a bit more than bullion price. Not a great deal more , but more all the same.
