What is the "briar patch" on the football field?

I just heard Gruden say Von Miller needs to make more plays in the "briar patch". I watch football religiously, and have never heard that term. Can anyone shed some light?

I assume that he's referring to the middle of the field, between the hashes, in the thick of the action, etc. But, I've never heard the term "briar patch" used before in football either. I suspect it's a manufactured idiosyncrasy of his on-screen persona that is supposed to sound "folksy" to people.
