PVC flips and PCGS submissions.

Every once in awhile I still see one of the old soft PVC flips and I have quite a few as well. Do you think PCGS will automatically reject any coin submitted in a PVC flip as "PVC residue?" Or do they still evaluate the coin. I suspect the sniffer would sniff it out, but PVC residue that is not active and hasn't turned green might not be detectable to the naked eye, and I would think they would protect themselves against a future buy back.

What say you?

Why not remove from PVC and give it an acetone bath then put in non-PVC flip before submitting? Seems easy enough to avoid the hassle.

Not me, I'm speaking hypothetically here. I'm sure there are plenty of people that don't know the difference.

PVC is safe for the SHORT-TERM. Sending them coins in PVC flips will almost certainly do no harm whatsoever to the coins. It's when coins stay in PVC flips for months or years that they get damaged.

I don't know the difference. I am planning on a submission soon and I have some flips given to me by an ebay seller, at my request, and i hope they are "safe". How do you tell????image

If they smell like a new shower curtain, they're PVC and are not safe for long term storage of coins.

PVC flips are softer feeling and more flexible than non pvc flips. When you sign up for a CC membership, PCGS usually sends you a few non pvc flips.

It takes time to cause the residue, it doesn't happen overnight.

I sold a collection for a person who collected heavily until around 1986. Some of the stuff in PVC still was OK, some was slimy.....image

Uh - oh. I think I have some of those. What about the plastic notebook pages for storage of 2x2 holders? I think the ones I have smell like a new shower curtain. Are those safe for long term storage? I sure learn a lot lurking here. I don't post often because when I do I show my lack of knowledge! Thanks to all for sharing your knowledge.

I understand that Heritage ships sold coins in the old soft flips. I wonder if they send them to PCGS when they have them certified for a customer? Just curious.

If you can smell it, it's giving off fumes. Not quite as bad as having your coin in direct contact with a PVC flip but I would still recommend looking for some polyethylene sheets for safe long term storage of your coins.

  • I thought PCGS actually prefers that you send your coins in 2.5x2.5 *soft* flips,
because it is easier to get the coins out without possibly scratching them.

I'm thinking that the fine folks in receiving transfer your coins image to the in-house hard flip when they are entered into the system before the graders see them.

If you've ever been to a coin show, you know the smell of PVC. It's that chemical smell that hits you immediately upon stepping onto the bourse floor.

To me, it is the smell of manna from heaven! image
  • My coin collection is a PVC-free zone. For me, PVC is for plumbing, S&M clothing, and Blue Man Group instruments, but not for coins. It's too easy for anyone to procrastinate moving coins into better holders. It's cheaper and more ecologically sound not to produce throw-away plastics, when the coins eventually have to go into something else.

I don't think PCGS refunds the grading fees for coins they return ungraded because of PVC contamination.image
