PVC flips and PCGS submissions.

Every once in awhile I still see one of the old soft PVC flips and I have quite a few as well. Do you think PCGS will automatically reject any coin submitted in a PVC flip as "PVC residue?" Or do they still evaluate the coin. I suspect the sniffer would sniff it out, but PVC residue that is not active and hasn't turned green might not be detectable to the naked eye, and I would think they would protect themselves against a future buy back.

<< <i>Why not remove from PVC and give it an acetone bath then put in non-PVC flip before submitting? Seems easy enough to avoid the hassle. >>
Not me, I'm speaking hypothetically here. I'm sure there are plenty of people that don't know the difference.

<< <i>I don't know the difference. I am planning on a submission soon and I have some flips given to me by an ebay seller, at my request, and i hope they are "safe". How do you tell????
If they smell like a new shower curtain, they're PVC and are not safe for long term storage of coins.

PVC flips are softer feeling and more flexible than non pvc flips. When you sign up for a CC membership, PCGS usually sends you a few non pvc flips.
I sold a collection for a person who collected heavily until around 1986. Some of the stuff in PVC still was OK, some was slimy.....
Uh - oh. I think I have some of those. What about the plastic notebook pages for storage of 2x2 holders? I think the ones I have smell like a new shower curtain. Are those safe for long term storage? I sure learn a lot lurking here. I don't post often because when I do I show my lack of knowledge! Thanks to all for sharing your knowledge.

If you can smell it, it's giving off fumes. Not quite as bad as having your coin in direct contact with a PVC flip but I would still recommend looking for some polyethylene sheets for safe long term storage of your coins.

because it is easier to get the coins out without possibly scratching them.

If you've ever been to a coin show, you know the smell of PVC. It's that chemical smell that hits you immediately upon stepping onto the bourse floor.
To me, it is the smell of manna from heaven!
