What's wrong with this Jordan RC?

I came across this one on ebay. Aren't the boarders around the pic a little small?

It was brought up 9 days ago: Jordan thread

Good to see that PSA is really protecting it's image and value of it's brand. 9 days and no action has been taken yet. Nice to know that they are looking out for collector's interest.

    Never get cheated.

whoa. looks like it got trimmed again since the last thread.....perhaps a rounded cut along the yellow band would at least give us all the opportunity to believe that we've witnessed yet another amazing hobby discovery. image

They [PSA] could have and eBay will not take action -- this has happened to me when reporting fake flips.

Also, I don't think it's really up to PSA to police every card out there.

It is when it is brought up on THEIR site, and their "partners" site: ebay. PSA is an authorized third party grader by ebay. They hold a trademark on their flips and holders, when one or more is being faked the should act.

Fake slabs being ignored hurt collectors and the SHAREHOLDERS of CU. The guy who gets stuck with this piece of trash is eventually going to find out, then what? You have a buyer who doesn't trust your product anymore. Think food poisoning at an expensive restaurant, would you be in a hurry to go there again?

I have to agree. I wish PSA were more vigilant when it came to protecting their brand in cases like these when the issue is brought up on their forum...

The seller is a power seller, too...did anyone contact him during the auction to notify him the holder was fake?

I sent a message to the seller:

"A flood of message board members are stating that the '86 Jordan RC PSA 8 that sold today is a badly trimmed card in a fake holder. My personal opinion, based on the scans from two different message threads, is the card has been trimmed and the PSA holder has been opened and resealed. My suggestion is to send it to PSA to verify the card. Or at least call them first and send them a good scan of this card. And then come to the message boards to thank the members for discovering this trimmed card in a fake holder and for saving your good ebay seller reputation.

    Sincerely,

    Bob"

  • That message to the SELLER will do absolutely nothing... They are aware what they are selling... It has to be sent to the buyer

The seller did respond to my above message quickly. I had a feeling he would. Here's what he had to say:

"...That is no good. As you can see I bought this card two weeks ago on here. I thought it sold cheaply enough to make a profit. I'll forward this to the buyer. I've had all kinds of messages, offers, don't know who to believe these days its a shame. As far as my selling reputation, I am confident of the job I do on each transaction, and this will be no exception. Thanks for your advice.

I'm going to open an immediate claim myself about this before it goes too long..."

P.S. By putting in a claim with ebay within 30-days, this seller (who said he bought this Jordan two weeks ago) should be able to to recoup his loss, and by letting his buyer know whats going on, he will be doing the right thing. I think image

The problem here is he did not notice "the trim job" on this card and the "messy looking, frosty-edged, re-slabbed PSA holder". Guess there was a reason he got the Jordan at a cheap price two weeks ago? He "way overpaid"! image

That was my original point. Now this guy is goning to be very weary of any PSA slab from now on, and may not buy anymore. If PSA had notified ebay to shut down the 1st listing there wouldn't be 2 NEW people upset with PSA, the new buyer and the new seller.

I received another update from the reseller of this trimmed Jordan in a fake PSA holder:

    "...Dear rbdjr1,

    Hello Bob,

Just wanted to give you an update. When you messaged me, it spawned an all day task of looking into this card.

My buyer paid and was immediately refunded.

I also began a dialogue with the person I bought it from.

After everything he talked about and the way he is handling this, I believe he personally constructed this card/case after purchasing the reprint on ebay.

I also opened up a case to return the item for refund, and called ebay, and they already decided in my favor, so I will be returning the item.

Would you do me a favor and post a summary of these results on whatever board you were talking about? As you can see from my auctions that are available now, I have a great selection of modern day inserts and autographs as that is primarily what I sell with the occasional unique item for instant re-sale.

Although, I do not believe this will hurt my reputation as it is a very isolated event that I handled as best I could once I figured out the truth about this card, I still would like people concerned about this card/transaction to know that it has been taken care of professionally, and that I am doing the same to make sure I GET MY MONEY BACK on this card as well.

But I have also just in the past day learned a lot about graded card fraud and how to detect the difference, in the case and the card itself.

Thanks again for the heads up, and possibly saving me some trouble down the road.

    Take care. - bigthingslittleprices..."

    P.S.

Yes, PSA should have got envoled with the first sale, but at least the two Jordan threads here has "stopped the damage" and it seems that two victims (the second seller and the end buyer) will be made whole, thanks to these threads. I had a feeling the reseller would respond to my message to him because he had bid on several of my auctions over the past months. I'm glad he did respond to my message, and glad he is resolving this "Jordan fraud" in a favorable way!

Mine came back with a "reaffirmed" '8' grade. Basically had my money tied up for 3 months.....
  • knowledge is power. if you're buying a high grade MJ 86/87 Fleer, then you should look at quite a few examples and be able to spot a shaky/questionable card which this card CLEARLY is. If somebody's bidding or buying this, and thinking it's legit and never tampered with or altered, they're a dolt.
  • From those pictures, it doesn't even look like the original scammer- whether it's this seller or someone who had it before him- was trying very hard. And someone was still willing to pay $578 for it.

    Sad.
