Grading question on this Jefferson Nickel?

BigDowgieBigDowgie Posts: 1,780 ✭✭✭✭
I have an earlier post on the 1941-S Large S DDR-001. I sent it in for PCGS grading in order to add it to my "All Variety" Set. I just received word that it was gently placed in a Body Bag! The scratch on the reverse was the death blow. I spoke to a PCGS Assiciate and was informed their grading standards do not allow coins to receive numeric grades if there is a scratch on the coin.

Obviously, this coin has no significant value other than to me and maybe a couple others. I expected a grade lower for the scratch, maybe an MS62 or MS63, not a Body Bag. The scratch is not distracting, as if it were across Jefferson's face or Monticello. It doesn't take away form the overall look of the coin. What are you thoughts or am I just a whiner?

I've seen egg basket loads of slabbed coins with scratches. Is that the scratch under the U in UNUM? Is it a gouge, a staple scratch or a contact mark from another coin?

Yes, under UNUM. The scratch is definitely not staple. I will have to wait to get the coin back to better assess the possible cause of the scratch. These were the quick pictures I took before sending it in.

did they note that it was 1941-S Large S DDR-001?? if that gets noted on a "Genuine" holder i guess you wouldn't need or care about the grade, right?? that recognition seems to be the sticking point, and i also consider that you are now officially whining.image

I'd send it to ANACS for the designation.

I think it kind of looks too much like damage to fly in this case.
I've seen a few circulated grades with scratches that appeared to be from other coins but don't remember any in MS getting grades.

OK, call me a whiner! The 1939 DDO-007 (discovery piece) graded MS66 and the 1954-D/D RPM#1 graded MS65.

keets - Unfortunately PCGS does not attribute varieties other than the Cherry Pickers.

TexasNationals - You make a good point, but it still hurts!

I believe PCGS is less and less tolerant of scratches (and things like them) as the grade of the coin goes up. In this particular case, even though the 'issue' is on the reverse it's simply too large -- and the grade of the coin too high -- to be allowed into a problem-free holder.
    When in doubt, don't.

You let one in, then you have to allow the others in...it's far easier to reject than to accept.

I will go out further than I normally would consider- any chance this is a strike through and not a scratch? It is worthy of some thought based on the image and the turn of the scratch.

I am willing to concede the arguement upon submission of different images

well then that makes the answer "send it to whoever attributes the variety" since that is what you want, right??

keets, another unfortunate chapter in this saga, my "All Variety" Set are all PCGS coins! The variety attributions, well, you just have to take my word on them. Hope the pictures support the attribution!

  • Oh boy oh boy a scratch! We cant have that! Gouges , dents, scrapes they are ok. Cant have scratches though. Also as Lafoe said earlier there are many many coins with scratches in graded holders so what he told you is bogus!

IIRC, the 1941 Large S is recognized by Cherrypickers. Did PCGS at least attribute the coin as a Large "S" even if they don't recognize the DDR?

I've had coins bagged for less than that scratch, and I don't think you'd have any better luck on a resubmission.

For the person who thought it was a strike-through, from the photos I have to disagree but even if it was it would still get bagged. I had a nice high-grade 1941 DDO cent with a struck-thru on the reverse, I even put a note in the flip saying it was as struck and not damaged, and it came back bagged anyway.

Thanks for pretty much everyone calling me a whiner! Hey, it's in a PCGS holder, while not with a grade I would have liked (N1), it still fills a hole in the Set. I'll post pictures of the new additions when they come home!

    Till next time!

I always found if I could not get something graded for whatever reason in the Jeff category, I always used SEGS

in all honesty, I buy most of my Jeffs in PCGS plastic, but if there is a problem coin and I wanted
an honest grade opinion written nicely and packaged, ive used SEGS and I have bought problems graded by SEGS.

I have done this for everything boarder line or iffy,(JEFFERSON) I fgure the grades percise and if a day
does come when there are broader acceptences then I can pop em into the holder i want.

till then they are safe and accurately graded.

Still a nice coin. My opinion doesn't change the way they decide to grade it or not.

I agree with this, on a lower grade circ coin that scratch probably wouldn't stop it from grading.

in all honesty, do ya really care about the scratch, seriously?

certain ones require different thinking. Its yours, you like it, I know I like it-

do ya really care? some of the nicest coins can be raw or in diff plastic

I think your problem here is you wanna jam it in your set

just add a notation, the serious collector will admire you for your coin, not
weither if its in plastic and whoms plastic it is.

I know I dont care, I like it, and I live and breathe jeffs
