    Yes, plus sometimes on older silver coins, the
    edge of the rim is shaved to try to recover silver.

    In the case of gold dollars its when the mount, or loop, and its solder...is removed in some way which changes the rims or reeding.

    For silver coins, rim bumps is what I've always heard.
