1990 Pro Set Series 1- 5 Box "Live Break" w/ very special find...

Just received a 5 box lot of 1990 Pro Set series 1 football.

I have a few hours so I started in on them. The first thing I noticed is that all 5 boxes have the gold-bordered box bottom, which I thought meant one of the common, mid-run assortments.

Opening the first box, I found these two guys:

This is a milestone in my 21 years of breaking 1990 Pro Set series 1.

Sadly, no large Ditka, Shell or any other major variations, in fact, most appear to be the corrected versions or the more common errors.

Box 2:

Corrected Marion (I really should just be grateful...)
Corrected Ditka
Corrected Shell (small banner, 11/25)
Corrected pretty much everything but Perry Kemp.

  • Box 3:

    More corrected Marions.
    More common versions of variations.

  • I haven't kept up with 1990 Pro Set errors or variations in a long time.

I remember the Eric Dickerson, Lombardi Trophy (were those ever in packs?) and a couple of other big ones. I think I paid $40 for a Johnny Holland no name on back at one point. Probably worth 1 cent now, lol. I'll have to go through my commons again and look for the good ones.
  • So, in summary...

Box 1 had 2 Fred Marion "belt" errors. No other major or scarce variations.

Boxes 2-5, had corrected Marions and no other major or scarce variations.

So I don't have roughly $1000 worth of Fred Marion Errors, but it was pretty great pulling that card after all these years.

I still haven't checked the backs of the cards for blanks, misprints, wrongbacks, etc. Will update if anything like that is found.

Congratulations on those tough Marion cards. I hadn't thought about those in quite a while; good to see them.

Congrats. Did you happen to get multiple Frank Warren rookies? I need to get a bunch to submit sooner or later for my Saints Hall of Fame set.

    thanks.

I probably have close to 100 of his card. I will look and see what I have in decent shape.

They were the first ever for me. I'd kind of written off ever pulling them assuming that they were only inserted in the very earliest print run.

Now, I need to pull a Lombardi, a Risien and a Dickerson to complete the checklist.

Hilgenberg has a variation so I have those set aside. I don't think I own any 9 or 10 worthy copies. I'll check the others.

Inspired me to look at the 1990 Pro Sets cards I have and found the following (only looked for ones with at least a * from jacksoncoupage's website):

#78 Troy Aikman - white line in "Injured"

#223 Carl Banks - pink line through "TEAM" and "N.Y."

#289 Charles Haley - correct fumble total

#668 Stan Humphries - slightly cropped name on front right

Always looking for 1993-1999 Baseball Finest Refractors and1994 Football Finest Refractors.

  • Jackson: I found 16 boxes of the 89 Prosets. I am sure I have a full case of them but I have not been able to put my hands on them. I am going to open one of the boxes to see what they might contain. I will keep you posted. Also I found a couple cases of the UD first year football packs. I wonder if they are of any value. Also I found two cases of the first year UD Basketball and Hockey cards. any ideas on them. Thanks

I just listed the 1989 Gizmo "Footbal" variation in PSA 10 on ebay ---- this is extremely rare and even harder in PSA 10......

Everyone should really appreciate what Jackson Coupage does because not only is it very time consuming, it helps us deal with the over produced card era that we all fell victim too...

    thanks JC

Congrats on the Marions...always funny. How many boxes(cases) have you busted of this product since it's release and what do you do with the plain commons?
