Terminal die state? Guess the VAM, Guess the Grade

Pulled this out of the melt pile to take a few photos. I hit it with MS70 yesterday. It cleaned up nicely!

Lots of cracks in this die.

    Why do you say "terminal?"

You were going to have that melted? I'll guess MS63 due to the scratch on the cheek.

"are" going to have that melted - sadly, yes! It is worth no more than melt if it grades a 62-63. Price guide for a 62 is $48 and 63 is $75. They sell for $45 - $55 on ebay. I am getting about $34 melt for it. Add $18 for grading and that's already $52. Not including postage to/from PCGS and the $8 charge. Even adding it to an order would marginally be worth it.

I think it would go MS64.

Just put it up raw on eBay. It's better than melting it sheesh.

By melting it, it goes into bars, which allows COMEX life and let's the bankers keep us all in debt slavery. Seriously, do not melt. Sell it to somebody who wants the coin.

I am liquidating a collection for a friend. He wants the cash. I have plenty of 1921s. although this is really nice, I just don't need it! Whether they actually end up being melted is unknown to me. There are 30 something Morgans and Peace being sold like this. This is what I was talking about in an earlier post about the high price of silver hurting the hobby by removing from the collector pool nice coins that have more value in metal than in numismatics.

Looks quite possibly 64. Marks show up differently on 1921s compared to earlier years, due to the lower relief of the design. The coins tend to look worse than expected for the grade.

As for the VAM, I'm going to say VAM 3. D2 (16 berry) reverse, no pitting, no clashes, no significant die breaks, and the two leftmost upper tail feathers are strong enough that there probably aren't any scribbling scratches there. There may be slight doubling or tripling on the obverse periphery that I can't see from the picture.

Raw on ebay is a total crap shoot. I doubt I'd get more than melt and then I'd have to ship, worry about chargebacks or returns, etc. I have piles of coins to liquidate, I can't realistically sell them one at a time. I did rescue a few of the nicer ones and better dates and they are off to PCGS.

Here is one on ebay that went for $37 - Ebay 1921 raw

I think you're making a mistake with that strategy.

Why does it have to pass through PCGS to be 'knighted' a '62'? It's clearly unc.

So, put it on the PCGS Buy, Sell, Trade board....at least it might go to a collector.

Sounds REALLY good...in theory... been there, tried that, got the t-shirt, and that was it. No one is interested in this stuff. Check out my listings on the BST you'll see almost no responses. I got a few PMs from melt buyers and they are the ones that got it (at melt).

The coin won't grade, based on the rim damage that is clearly visible.

I completely agree with you. Just imagine the truly rare pieces that have been destroyed due to sellers not knowing what they were selling. Tragic.
