2009 Ultra High Reliefs -> PL

I read recently that PCGS is now grading some of the 2009 Ultra High Relief gold coins as Proof Like.

I have a First Strike 2009 that scored MS70.

What do folks think about re-submitting for a shot at PL 70?

    Got a pic?

  • I can get one. Are there obvious PLs and obvious non-PLs?

I didnt realize there was a great degree of variation from the Mint on these coins.

Some of them have die polish lines in the fields and even though these can make MS70 they are not likely to make the PL designation.
Mine is also First Strike so I am not submitting it again and losing that designation. But mine is only a MS69 and I just plan to holding it.
BTW imageaboard and enjoy the ride.

  • So you lose the First Strike designation if you resubmit? Thats seems silly. PCGS verified it was First Strike, and they cant verify that its the same coin coming out of the slab and going back in?

I am a fan of PCGS but have to take issue on that one.

Thanks for the welcome and tips.

Also, you don't lose the MS-70 grade either. Worst case is that it stays in the same grade/first strike. With luck, PL gets added.

That's what I was reasoning out, I mean it would be kind of lousy if they decided you are now MS69.

Does anyone happen to know the rates of MS70's making it to PL70s?

ie are we talking 1 in 100 makes it, or 30% of the MS70's are making it to PL70, etc....

If I submit my MS70 UHR under PCGS Secure Plus, is the fee "just" $45 or do you have to pay extra for it being a 70? The form is clear about paying extra to reholder a 70, but nothing about regrading a 70, because until now there was never a need to resub a 70...

Not like I have one to submit, but is there much of a premium between 69 and 69pl or 70 and 70pl? I am just wondering if it would be worth it.

  • I think the First Strike MS70's go for like $2300

A PCGS First Strike PL70 Im told is worth $5,000 to $7,000

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Any updated valuations for 2023? That seemed to be missing from the PCGS Website article posted this morning on the 2009 Ultra-High Reliefs.
