James Monroe Missing Edge Lettering

As I was going through a few 2008 Uncirculated Dollar Sets I found this James Monroe $1 with missing edge lettering. Any information anyone has regarding population and value would be greatly appreciated as information is hard to find on this one. I do plan on submitting it for grading. Thanks in advance and to those who I have spoke with via PM.

Wow!!! Great find!! The best I could do in my 2007 mint set was a sacagawea without edge lettering!!
  • I found this one in the (5) coin set with the silver eagle. Yes it is out of the original packaging as I was going through removing the silver eagles when I found it.

62 of these coins have been graded to date in grades ranging from SP64 to SP69.

I paid $350 for my coin in a 2008 Dollar Set which eventually graded at SP66.

I think I got a tremendous deal as the price should have been closer to $450.

I expect the price for SP67 and up would begin in the $750-$1,000 range if the coins were bid for actual rarity but if the wrong venue is chosen, the return could be significantly less.

It's a SUPER find! I went thorugh better than 50 sets with no luck at all and took a significant loss when reselling them.

Nice Find! image They were only found in the dollar sets, right?

If someone could provide the PCGS number for that coin, you could look up the PCGS graded population. I never did figure out where they hide the data and the PCGS numbers for Missing Edge Letter Error Dollars. Anyone know?

  • Already pulled the SAEs out of mine and only gave the pres dollars and Sac a quick look, obv and rev. Now I need to go back and check the third side.

Edit: Great find, this should teach me to look better at what is in front of me.

  • Here is are 2 questions.........

PCGS has traditionally labeled the MEL coins with no mint mark designation.

If a Monroe MEL is submitted sealed intact along with others will it be listed as a P mint??

    Second question............

I recall something similar was found in the 2008 mint sets.........anyone recall what error was in the Mint sets??

Dateless coins do not receive a mintmark designation regardless of what they appear in.

2008 Mint sets may have had John Quincy Adams - Missing Edge Lettering coins but I do not know for sure.

I guess more of these will be found now that these sets are being opened.
  • It looks like the mint caught and destroyed at least some of these.........

Yes, to me it suggests that these surviving, uncancelled Monroe MEL were not just the result of a brief mechanical slip up but perhaps part of a larger pile of MEL coins, the majority of which were caught and destroyed by the mint.

Are these only being found in the 6 coin uncirculated dollar set?

    ........................................................................................................................

I recall they were initially reported in the annual uncirculated dollar sets.

That is where I recently found my example while scraping several sets to salvage the 2008-W ASE.

It makes sense that these types of errors are often found in a particular selected mint product.

I would guess during mass production of the Monroe dollars the errors occured at some point that just happened to place them among the 30,000-50,000 Monroe dollar coins pulled to make up the 6 coin dollar sets.

That was fortunate because the annual dollar coin packaging makes them easy to spot if you know to look.

Based on TPG numbers they are far, far rarer than say the Washington MEL coins.........perhaps 1 Monroe MEL for every 1000 Washington MEL.

Yep, I will have to open the wrappers on my sets.
