Pop Phenomenon

So I bought a nice Merc in 67FB a few years ago (Pop 52/0). Over the past two years it has gone to 53/0 ... 53/1 ... 53/0 ... and back to 52/0.

What's your guess as to what is going on? Downgrades? Cracked out labels being sent in?

Very odd. Your guess is as good as mine. So which Merc is it?

Why haven't the pops increased over that time? Has the grading process become more conservative/strict? Does anyone think the number of coins that make up the pop numbers, having remained pretty much the same, would be considered overgraded?

Do some folks have MS Rolls of Mercs from the 1940s, sure some are out there, how about the 1930s...maybe a few, how about original rolls from the 1920s...probably not....so now you are looking for the nicest examples that have just been sitting in 2x2s within different collections....I would imagine the majority of the good stuff has been sent in for grading already...which would prevent this population of MS67FBs from exploding.

I do not think there are a bunch of over graded MS67FBs in the pops, a few sure. Some of the pop might be bloated from the crackout game as well. I would guess the real POP is somewhere in the low to mid 40s.
